Description
For wine lovers, Lanzarote is paradise. Old indigenous vines on lava soils, with Atlantic influences, but most of the wines were mainly cheap tourist wines. Rayco Fernández, a distributor based in Gran Canaria, felt the same way. He decided to do something about it. With a few like-minded partners, he decided to make true terroir wine on the island. And so it happened, and with Puro Rofe, exceptionally fine wines have now been produced in an extreme landscape. The international wine press is also praising the entire series, all of which score well above 90/100 points.
Masdache is a village near La Geria on Lanzarote, and the 2020 Masdache is a Listán Blanco-based white wine, made with 35% Malvasía and 5% Diego, from plots planted in smaller holes with greenish walls (socos) of abundant lichen. It is a serious, proportioned, and harmonious white wine, a little shy and compressed at first with a creamy note, perhaps from its time in the barrel, where it fermented and aged for seven months. It has 12.92% alcohol with good freshness, a pH of 3.22, six grams of acidity, and a very dry, austere finish. Only 1,218 bottles of this elegant Atlantic wine were produced. 93/100 Parker
FACT: Puro Rofe wines are all wines from a specific region/location. They are all single vineyards, and only a handful of bottles are ever produced.

2024 - 2031
The 2023 Masdache showcases the profile of the year, purity, cleanliness, elegance and more freshness. It's a blend of Malvasía Volcánica (mostly) and Listán Blanco, without Diego this year because of a heat wave the first week of August. It feels more open, aromatic, expressive and elegant, with finesse and freshness, more ethereal. It's one of the lieux-dits that is warmer, and in 2023, it shows exceptionally well. There's aromatic herbs and aniseed with a lot of finesse. 1,950 bottles produced. It was bottled in May 2024.
2023 saw a huge crop in Lanzarote, a warm year with three million kilos, which was normal before (2015, 2017), but the last few years have been very small (and 2024 is small again, but they didn't make wine in 2024). Most of the grapes were picked in July when it was not that warm, but the wines are fresher and very elegant. All the wines have a similar vinification and élevage, direct pressing, fermentation in stainless steel with indigenous yeasts and eight months in a mixture of stainless steel and used barrels, quite transparent and non-invasive. The 2023s are the first wines to carry the organic certification, the more elegant and finest vintage to date. Bravo!

Wijnhuis
Lanzarote
