Description
The estate of Olivier and Corinne Merlin is located in the predestined village of Roche-Vineuse (literally: wine rock!) in the Mâconnais region. Burgundy, Mâcon and Beaujolais form the core range of the estate. Olivier studied oenology in Beaune and then worked as a cellar master in the Jura, where he met his wife Corinne. In 1985 he left for the Californian Napa Valley to vinify two vintages. At the beginning of 1987 he took over the 4.5 ha Domaine du Vieux Saint-Sortin. The old and dilapidated estate had been in the hands of the same family since 1750. Since then, the successful rise of Olivier and Corinne seems unstoppable. Olivier combines old wine wisdom, sharp observation and hard work in the vineyards, with modern technology. An indispensable part of his philosophy is to leave a cleared and ploughed vineyard fallow for 4-5 years. No synthetic pesticides or fertilisers are used, in Moulin-à-Vent they even work the vineyards with old-fashioned horsepower. No trendy nonsense, just pure old-fashioned common sense. The result can be summarised in four words: Balance, Purity, Complexity and Harmony
With the classification in 2020 arrives Sur La Roche has received the highest Premier Cru in Pouilly-Fuissé the vineyard is more than 300 meters above sea level. The Merlin Pouilly-Fuissé Sur la Roche Premier Cru has a clear fresh color, with a very elegant nose, perfumed, ripe herbs, sunny character with a mineral touch such as slate, lime and salt. The nose has a little more ripeness than the other Premier Cru's of Merlin but the taste retains the characteristic freshness of the vineyard. Always very limited availability and is a wine that can 'cellar' for 10 years plus without any problem

90/100
Decanter 90/100
2016: A bold nose of mandarin, toasted nuts, papaya, melon and vanilla. It's perky, lively and sikly in the mouth, delivering flavours of orange peel, honey, caramel and melon, with underlying smoke. Good tension, focus and persistence.

The domain of Olivier and Corinne Merlin is located in the predestined village of Roche-Vineuse (literally: wine rock!) In the Mâconnais region. Burgundy, Mâcon and Beaujolais form the core range of the domain. Olivier studied oenology in Beaune and then worked as a cellar master in the Jura, where he met his wife Corinne. In 1985 he left for the California Napa Valley to vinify two volumes. At the beginning of 1987 he took over the 4.5 ha Domaine du Vieux Saint-Sortin. The old and dilapidated domain had been owned by the same family since 1750. Since then, the successful advance of Olivier and Corinne seems to be unstoppable. Even the terrible hail storm that completely destroyed 80% of the vineyards within 20 minutes on July 20, 2004 could not stop them. Olivier combines old wine wisdom, keen observation and hard work in the vineyards, with modern technology. An indispensable part of his philosophy is the abandonment of a grubbed and plowed vineyard for 4-5 years. Therefore, 5-10% of its land is systematically not in production. No synthetic pesticide or fertilizer is used, Moulin-à-Vent even works with old-fashioned horsepower in the vineyards. Nothing trendy bland, but pure old-fashioned healthy farmers' minds. The result can be summarized in four words: balance, purity, complexity and harmony, both for the white and red wines of the domain.
