The Weingut Maximin Grünhaus lies at the foot of a steep slope on the left bank of the Ruwer. The leadership is in the hands of Dr. Carl von Schubert whose family has owned the property for five generations. Riesling has been cultivated on the beautiful southern slopes of the Abtsberg, Herrenberg and Bruderberg for over 1000 years. The Abbey of Sankt Maximin selected the best pieces for the table of the abbot (Abtsberg) and the choirmasters or Chorherren (Herrenberg) and the rest went to the common friars (Bruderberg). Under Napoleon the domain came into private hands and eventually into the possession of the von Schubert family.

The impressive 2020 Maximin Grünhäuser Abtsberg Riesling Spatlese is only made in Magnum format. No Auslese was made that year so this Spatlese is the highest class. The wine is extremely elegant and inviting on the nose with cassis, spice, pear and fresh fruit and mineral notes. The wine is beautifully spicy on the palate and leaves a grandiose feeling of spice in the long and spice infused finish. Rich and intense on the palate, this is a very juicy and spicy Spätlese whose mineral/salty finish absorbs the sweetness almost completely.

If you're looking for the unique combination of light-heartedness and intensity with great elegance in Riesling, then you should look for the coolest places. The Mosel or Nahe region may be, but even slightly cooler, namely the Saar or Ruwer. The Weingut Maximin Grünhaus is located at the foot of a steep slope on the left bank of the Ruwer.

The wines of Maximin Grünhaus enjoy a great reputation for their unparalleled finesse, refinement and purity. Even today, connoisseurs count the wines among the absolute elite in the field of Prädikat wines. In particular, the Kabinett and Spatlese of the Abtsberg are in a class of their own.
