Description
The grapes for this Pinot Nero 'Schweizer' grow on different plots at an altitude between 350 and 700 meters. The wide variety of soil types gives this wine its own character. Only the best grapes are selected. A wine that, according to Franz Haas, is difficult to capture, 'for those who live intense emotions'. The Pinot Nero Schweizer has a ruby red color. With a seductive bouquet of ripe berries and cherries, spicy notes of pepper and leather. A sensational taste, elegant, beautiful tannins, subtle and structure. 92/100 Suckling & Parker
ABOUT FRANZ HAAS
The winery Franz Haas, founded in 1880, is located in the beautiful Alto-Adige area on the border of Austria and Italy. Since then, the company has been working for seven generations. The winery was always passed down to sons of the same name, Franz. In the 1980s, most of the vineyards were renovated, making room for new varieties that better match the type of “terroir” of the region. The grapes come from 55 hectares of vineyards. The vineyards start at an altitude of 220 meters, rising to 1,150 meters. There is a wide variety of microclimates and soils, from clay to limestone. The vineyards are among the highest vineyards in Alto Adige. The choice to plant vines at these altitudes has proven that optimal and aromatic wines can be produced with a nice acidity. Large temperature differences between day and night and an enormous attention to the vineyards also helped.

A popular and versatile wine, the Franz Haas 2020 Alto Adige Pinot Nero (in a screw-cap closure with 90,000 bottles made) shows cassis and wild berry fruit. This vintage offers simple lines and perhaps less complexity than we saw in previous editions, however it does reveal ample brightness and freshness. The wine is aged in barrique for 12 months, with 20% new oak.
The Franz Haas vineyards start at 220 meters in elevation with Lagrein and reach all the way up to 1,150 meters above sea level where the Pinot Nero is planted. "The low spring temperatures of 2021 meant that flowering came a few weeks later than average," says Andi Punter. "The harvest came later as a consequence, and the grapes were healthy. Red grapes ripened perfectly despite the late harvest."
