Driving north along Burgundy's famous Route des Grands Crus in the Côte de Nuits, not long after passing through the village of Nuits-St-Georges and the holy grail of vineyards in Vosne-Romanee, just past Clos de Vougeot, come you are in the charming village of Chambolle-Musigny. It's a postcard-perfect town, surrounded by vineyards, and while just about any village in Burgundy could follow that description, there's one difference: unless you know your names by heart, you might not realize you're passing by vines from which most of the world's iconic Pinot Noir wines are produced.
Sophie and Alain Meunier-Confuron run one of the best Burgundy domains. Alain has been providing one quality improvement after another for years. The vineyards are each a maximum of 1 hectare and are located in the main municipalities of the Cotes de Nuits, with appellations such as Chambolle-Musigny and Vosne-Romanée. The subsoil consists of rocks, sand and marl. The sticks are sometimes more than 90 years old. The wine is not filtered, but clarified with proteins.
This 100% pinot noir from Chambolle-Musigny village comes from three plots vinified together, from lieux-dits "Derriere la Four", "Les Pas de Chats" and "Les Condemennes" (1.15 hectares). As with all wines from Confuron, the fruit and terroir predominate, so here too 30% has been raised on new oak and the rest on used oak barrels and the Chambolle-Musigny has also undergone a long-term malolactic fermentation.
The bouquet is ripe with bright black currants and cassis fruit neatly layered with the oak. The palate is medium-bodied with a ripe, chocolate-tinted entrance, a fine acidity and a. The oak will take a few years after bottling to fully integrate, but it should be worth the wait. In summary, this Chambolle Musigny is very elegant (the trademark of Confuron) very pleasant on the palate, but with a certain structure and power.
