Description
Domaine Chapuis: tradition at the foot of the Corton hill
Domaine Chapuis is located in Aloxe-Corton, at the foot of the famous Corton hill. The family has been involved in winemaking for generations. The oldest parts of the cellars date back to the fourteenth century, while the current family home was built in the eighteenth century. Today, the sixth generation manages the estate. They work with vineyards spread across the hill and produce both red and white wines. Its long history and continued presence in this region make Domaine Chapuis a fixture in Burgundian tradition.
The terroir of Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cru
Corton-Charlemagne is one of the most prestigious Grand Crus of the Côte de Beaune. The appellation is located on the higher slopes of the Corton hills, divided between Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses, and Ladoix-Serrigny. The plots are situated at high altitude, providing ideal exposure for slow and even ripening. The soil consists of chalky marl and clay, resulting in wines with tension, depth, and mineral precision.
The altitude and a relatively cool microclimate create a long growing season, allowing aromas and structure to develop slowly. Chardonnay is the only grape used for Corton-Charlemagne. The combination of ripe fruit notes, crisp acidity, and a distinct minerality makes this Grand Cru unique within Burgundy.
Vinification and maturation of the 2020
Domaine Chapuis harvests the grapes by hand and processes them with great care. The slopes on which the Chardonnay grows are steep and consist of soil rich in limestone and marl, which directly contributes to the wine's intensity and structure. After harvest, the wine is fermented and then aged for twelve months on its lees in French oak barrels. Only a small portion of the barrels are new, allowing the wood to subtly retain its presence and contribute primarily to texture and complexity without disrupting the mineral purity.
After the maturation, the wine is aged in the bottle for a period of time before being released. This gives the aromas time to meld, resulting in a Grand Cru with balance, tension, and a refined structure.
Color, smell and taste of 2020
The 2020 Corton-Charlemagne displays a light golden yellow color with a subtle green hue. The nose reveals fresh citrus fruits, white flowers, and mineral notes. Swirling also reveals hints of ripe pear, light spices, and a touch of honey. The aroma is complex, yet clean and crisp, befitting a Grand Cru from this region.
On the palate, the wine is rich yet refined. The body is full, without being heavy. The acidity adds tension and vibrancy. Flavor notes of citrus, white stone fruit, and subtle spice are supported by a carefully measured oak note. The minerality provides length and refinement on the finish. The structure and concentration give the wine the aging potential typical of Corton-Charlemagne.
