Description
History of Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils
Domaine Bernard Moreau et Fils is one of the most respected producers of Chassagne-Montrachet. Since its founding in the early 20th century, the Moreau family has worked for generations with the same philosophy: respect for the terroir and minimal intervention in the cellar. Today, the estate is led by brothers Alex and Benoît Moreau, who together have refined the wines to a perfect balance between tradition and precision. Their style is characterized by the pure expression of Chardonnay, with wines that combine elegance, tension, and depth.
The region and terroir of Chassagne-Montrachet
Chassagne-Montrachet lies in the heart of the Côte de Beaune and is world-renowned for its white Chardonnay wines. The Premier Cru Les Chenevottes is located on the northern side of the village, on limestone and clay soils with excellent drainage. Its east-facing exposure ensures ample morning sunlight and maintains freshness in the afternoon. This produces wines with rich aromas, structure, and the distinctive minerality typical of this terroir. Les Chenevottes is often described as a cru that combines finesse and energy with ripe fruit and floral elegance.
The 2020 Domaine Bernard Moreau Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes
The 2020 vintage was warm and dry in Burgundy, but Bernard Moreau's wines show remarkable freshness and balance. Les Chenevottes 2020 is made entirely from Chardonnay, sourced from old vines with low yields. The grapes were hand-harvested and carefully selected. The wine fermented spontaneously with indigenous yeasts and then aged in French oak barrels, a small portion of which were new. Aging lasted approximately fifteen months, giving the wine a creamy texture without losing its precision.
Assessment and character
According to international tasters, the 2020 Les Chenevottes is among the estate's most refined wines in recent years. It was praised for its purity and expression of terroir. The nose opens with notes of white peach, ripe pear, and a hint of citrus blossom, followed by subtle notes of toast and almond. On the palate, it displays tension and energy, with a mineral core and a long, salty finish. The wine received a particularly high rating from Parker's Wine Advocate, who described it as a "Chassagne of exceptional depth, precision, and a silky structure that perfectly captures the essence of the terroir."
Color, smell and taste
In the glass, the wine shines with a light golden color and subtle green reflections. The nose is refined, with aromas of blossom, honey, toasted hazelnut, and a hint of buttery brioche. The palate is rich yet precisely balanced, with a lively acidity that keeps the fruit fresh. The texture is creamy, but never heavy. The finish is long and mineral, with notes of citrus, almond, and subtle spices. It is a wine that possesses both power and precision – a hallmark of the best wines from Chassagne-Montrachet.
Storage and drinking time
This wine is already beautifully balanced, but can easily age for another five to ten years. With age, the aromas will deepen, revealing honey, nuts, and subtle minerality. For those who appreciate Burgundy's vibrant side, this wine is at its most charming now. For those who appreciate complexity and depth, patience is rewarded.

The 2020 Chassagne-Montrachet 1er Cru Les Chenevottes wafts from the glass with aromas of pear, orange oil, lime zest, freshly baked bread and white flowers. Medium to full-bodied, layered and concentrated, it's elegant and fine-boned at only 13.1% alcohol, concluding with a long, saline finish.
The 2020 vintage has turned out brilliantly at Domaine Bernard Moreau—but what's new? Alex Moreau readied his harvesters promptly, as it takes eight days to pick the whole domaine, and began on August 20th. Yields were good, and the cellar is full (which is not the case in 2021), with alcohols moderate, the highest being 13.4%. As usual, the fruit is crushed before pressing (which lasts up to three and a half hours), briefly settled and barreled down (François Frères is the predominant cooper here) for vinification with plenty of lees, Moreau doing nothing to discourage quite protracted fermentations, which he finds build texture and complexity into the wines. For my palate, the results are some of the finest white wines produced on the Côte de Beaune, and they occupy a prominent place in my personal cellar. The market is certainly taking notice, and prices are rising fast, but readers won't want to miss the 2020s.

The domain was originally founded by Marcel Moreau, grandfather of the current owners.
Production by Bernard Moreau
The domain expanded to nine hectares, plus another five hectares of agriculture since 2005. The latest news is that the domain will be split between the brothers in 2021. Alex stays on site and Benoit develops his own winery. The village of Chassagne-Montrachet consists of several plots of land. a third comes from in and around Les Masures bordering Mergeots, the rest from the Puligny border. The vinification here is classic, all wines mature in oak barrels. Clarification and filtering are done as little as possible. Elegance and refinement are of paramount importance here. The wines of Moreau have undergone so much progression in quality in recent years that they are now considered among the top of the famous village of Chassagne-Montrachet. Bernard Moreau is the 4th generation to manage the family estate and has a total of 14 hectares of vineyards in 13 different areas within Chassagne-Montrachet and Saint-Aubin. Moreau does not have many secrets when it comes to that progression. For example, his friendship with Michel Colin-Deléger, one of the absolute stars there, and the arrival of his son Alexandre contributed greatly to the improvement in quality. Moreau's wines have received excellent reviews in La Revue du Vin de France and The Vine (Clive Coates).
