Description
The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru "Les Referts" from Domaine Bachelet-Monnot is a 100% Chardonnay from the unique terroir of the Premier Cru vineyard "Les Referts". This wine offers a bright and precise bouquet with notes of flint, indicating a mineral expression. The palate is well balanced with a lively acidity and subtle influences of new oak (less than 20%), which provides extra depth without masking the freshness. The wine exudes tension and energy, with a clean and persistent finish.
This Puligny-Montrachet 1er Cru is an excellent match for dishes such as grilled lobster, turbot with butter sauce or poultry in creamy sauces. Serve at a temperature of 12-14°C to fully develop its complexity and aromas.
Domaine Bachelet-Monnot
The Bachelet family is very well known in the Côte d'Or, they own plots on some of the most famous vineyards in Burgundy. Nevertheless, the family had some disagreements about the way things were going on at the estate. The youngest generation, brothers Marc and Alex, did not panic and studied viticulture at university and did internships elsewhere in France and America. When they returned to Burgundy, their grandfather decided not to give parts of his land to his own sons, but to his two grandsons. From day one, both boys threw themselves into their new work with great dedication. 2005 was the first harvest year that Marc and Alex Bachelet worked independently. The gentlemen have in common that they are both enormous perfectionists and also very eager to learn. They continuously try to improve and perfect things at the estate and with every visit things have changed, from the size of the barrels, the duration of the maturation, to the temperature of the cellar. In addition to the great wines they make in the prestigious villages of Puligny and Chassagne, Marc and Alexandre Bachelet also make exemplary wines in Maranges and Santenay.

The 2019 Puligny-Montrachet Village opens in the glass with notes of white peach, citrus oil, spring blossom, pastry cream and struck match. Medium to full-bodied and fleshy but tightly wound, it's lively and mineral, concluding with a chalky finish.
Though quantities are down due to frost, the 2019 vintage has turned out brilliantly at Maranges reference-point Domaine Bachelet-Monnot, where brothers Mark and Alexandre preside over a superb portfolio of serious, structured whites and demonstrative, pleasure-bent reds. Farming organically but without certification, the style here continues to evolve: since 2016, grapes have been crushed before pressing, and the brothers now retain more lees. As has been the case for some time now, white wines ferment and mature in 350-liter barrels. Red wine vinifications are gentle and are followed by maturation in modest percentages of new wood. Everything reviewed here comes warmly recommended.

From: Variations on a Theme: Burgundy 2020 Whites (Jul 2024)
The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru has a lovely bouquet with wonderful mineralité and tension, hints of Granny Smith and Petrichor. There is real energy coiled up in this Puligny. The palate is well-balanced with well-integrated oak. It has a stylistic similarity to Sauzet's Les Perrières, with real tension and poise. A sapid, malic finish lingers long in the mouth. Excellent. Tasted blind at the annual Burgfest tasting.

The 2020 Puligny-Montrachet Les Referts 1er Cru has a crisp, precise, gunflint-tinged bouquet that is beautifully defined and focused. The palate is very well balanced with a wonderful line of acidity. The judicious new oak (under 20%) just lends a little weight toward the finish. This is all about the tension and energy. A ridiculously good Les Referts from Domaine Bachelet-Monnot.

Marc Bachelet greeted me at his winery in Dezizes-lès-Maranges on a crisp, sunny morning. He and his brother Alexandre have set the standard not just in Maranges, but perhaps in the Côte de Beaune, their wines triumphing in many a blind “Burgfest” tasting. Bachelet-Monnot is on fire at the moment. “There was no risk of frost in 2020,” Marc explained in their spartan tasting room. “Flowering went well. We picked from August 20, beginning with a couple of parcels in Puligny-Montrachet and Bourgogne Blanc, then on August 25 and 26 we attacked the Premier Crus. There were large differences in maturity between parcels because the ripening occurred in August rather than in September, when the sugar levels increase more rapidly. We picked the reds from August 27. The 2020s do not show the heat like in 2018, and the pH levels came in between 3.15 and 3.20. Everything will be bottled in spring according to the lunar calendar, using natural corks.” What can I say that I have not said before: This was a thrilling set of white and reds, the kind of wines where I want to order a couple of cases as soon as I have tasted it. I highly recommend the 2020 Maranges La Fussières 1er Cru Blanc. This fast-improving appellation can excel at whites even if it is better known for reds – talking of which, the 2020 Maranges Clos de la Boutière 1er Cru is an absolute killer. This year, I did not discern a huge gap in quality between the outstanding Puligny Premier Crus Les Referts and Folatières and the sought-after Bâtard-Montrachet Grand Cru. I’d love to have all three in my cellar.
