Description
The former owner and namesake Louis Gaspard d'Estournel was known as the Maharaja of Saint-Estèphe. He decorated the castle in Indian style, gave grand parties and lived beyond his means. In 1852 he was completely destitute and had to sell his domain. He died a year later. Cos d'Estournel is perhaps the Chateau with the most new and advanced technique for making wine. From the harvest to the maturing of the bottles, everything is carefully monitored and carried out with the greatest care. For example, they have managed to create a vinification process in which the wine is transported without pumps. All actions are carried out by gravity. In 1855, the Chateau obtained the 2nd Grand Cru Classé status
The Les Pagodes de Cos 2020 is a blend of: CABERNET SAUVIGNON: 58% - MERLOT: 34% - CABERNET FRANC: 4% - PETIT VERDOT: 4%. Since its creation in 1994, Pagodes de Cos has always been made from grapes from vines growing on the same clearly defined terroir; they are on average forty years old. Pagodes de Cos is a seductive, balanced and opulent wine – the 2020 vintage continues to embody the personality of Pagodes de Cos and is an excellent introduction to the unique style of Cos d'Estournel. Refined and fresh at the same time, Pagodes de Cos 2020 is an elegant and extremely flavoursome wine with seductive notes of blackcurrant, blackberry, blueberry, violets, blackcurrant liqueur and tea.

This is a racy Pagodes with beautiful fruit and tannins that leave a nice, persistent finish. Medium to full body. Savory finish. Tight and clean.

From: Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)
The 2020 Les Pagodes de Cos is dark, sumptuous and super-expressive. There is an element of mystery to the 2020, it’s a wine that is not ready to show all of its charms just yet. Ripe dark cherry, plum, new leather, licorice, tobacco, incense and dried herbs all build nicely in a Pagodes that balances fruit richness and energy.

From: 2020 Bordeaux En Primeur: Almost Back to Normal (Jun 2021)
The 2020 Les Pagodes de Cos is very easy to like. Silky tannins and pretty, lifted aromatics play off a core of supple fruit. In most vintages, the Pagodes is perhaps a bit more exuberant. I am curious to see what things look like once the 2020 is in bottle.
