Description
The result of a rigorous selection at every stage of production, both in the vineyard and in the winery, this great, mainly Cabernet Sauvignon wine is typical of the Saint-Estèphe appellation. Structured and tannic, it nevertheless has all the elegance and refinement of a Grand Cru Classé. Over time, it develops a delicate and complex bouquet. Composed of 76% Cabernet Sauvignon, 20% Merlot, 3% Cabernet Franc and a dash of 1% Petit Verdot, the 2017 Montrose was aged in 60% new and 40% one-year-old oak barrels where it remained for 18 months. This Grand Cru represents 37% of the estate's total production. Deep garnet purple in colour, the nose takes some time to unfurl before revealing an impressively flamboyant core of black cherry preserves, warm cassis and baked plums with hints of redcurrant jelly, dark chocolate, liquorice, cardamom plus a gentle touch of candied violets. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has fantastic intensity with a very elegant, modest weight, with super-ripe, fine-grained tannins and tons of freshness to reveal a stunning array of beautiful black fruit. This is an incredibly stylish, balanced and refined Montrose!
The 2020 has received no less than 99-100/100 points from Antonio Galloni. This is a magnum of 1.5 liters. Even tastier and has an even longer drinking window .
FACT: It is worth mentioning that we buy the (Bordeaux) wines directly and never through intermediaries, because then we do not know which journeys the wine has made and how it has been treated. The wines come from the cellars of the Chateau directly to our conditioned Warehouse in Dordrecht where all our wines are stored. If you come and collect them, you will often also receive a nice discount.

From: Bordeaux 2020: Saving the Best for Last (Feb 2023)
The 2020 Montrose is epic. Dark, rich and brooding, the 2020 possesses remarkable intensity, and, yet it is somehow not excessively heavy. Time in the glass brings out the wine's more elegant sophisticated side. All the elements are so well-balanced. Red/purplish fruit, lavender rose petal, gravel and spice are all accented by veins of intense minerality that lend shape and energy. The 2020 is a modern-day classic for Montrose and one of the great wines of the Left Bank.

From: Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)
The 2020 Montrose was bottled in July 2022. The alcohol is 13.4%, a whole degree less than the previous year but with the same concentration (IPT is 80). It has a fabulous bouquet that delivers on all that promise from when I finally tasted the wine around a year earlier from barrel, a cornucopia of blackberry, bilberry, crushed stone, Indian ink and loamy/undergrowth scents. Very mercurial in the glass, it seems to shapeshift with every minute. The palate is medium-bodied with such a precise entry. This is far more detailed than either the 2019 or 2018, a symmetrical Montrose with unerring detail and mineralité, its silky texture belying the power underneath. This is unequivocally a brilliant wine and a benchmark in recent years. Contender for wine of the vintage.

From: Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)
The 2020 Montrose was picked September 10-29; the clusters between 10% and 20% smaller than normal. It has an intense nose that is even more powerful than the 2019, revealing layers of blackberry, briar, cedar, pencil shavings and smoke that evolve wonderfully in the glass. The palate is medium-bodied, precise and poised, with unerring symmetry and perfect salinity. Very harmonious, almost pixelated on the finish. This is simply brilliant.

Château Montrose is one of the most prestigious Médoc chateaus. Especially since the wealthy brothers Martin and Olivier Bouygues bought the chateau in 2006 and started a rigorous 'makeover'. They tackled absolutely everything from vineyard to cellar. The team is also being strengthened, including with Hervé Berland, who says goodbye to his position as director at Château Mouton-Rothschild to lead this ambitious project. Quality has skyrocketed ever since and the last few vintages Château Montrose has consistently been among the very best wines in Bordeaux; a great achievement! Part of the major quality improvement is a 'parcelic' approach, in which the vineyard is divided into small pieces, each of which is assessed, vinified and raised separately. The selection options have increased enormously as a result. Such that, in addition to a first and second wine, a third wine has also seen the light.
Chateau Montrose makes powerful wines that have a long life ahead of them. Although very tannic, the elegance and especially intensity is memorable. This one of the very best St. Estèphe wines has the 2nd Grand Cru Class status but could easily compete in the highest 1st Cru class. Since the 1989 harvest, followed by a 100-point score by Robert Parker in 1990, Montrose has earned a worldwide reputation and ranks among the greatest Bordeaux.
