Description
The Echo by Lynch-Bages has been named Echo because it receives the same attention as its big brother and process is also a copy (an Echo) from the vine to the cellar. It has the taste, smell and characteristic length of the Pauillacs. It is also endowed with roundness and suppleness making this wine earlier and more accessible than its big brother. The Echo has attractive dark berries with sweet spicy oak on the nose leading to a smooth palate with soft tannins and a fresh, approachable finish. Another big difference is the price.
The Echo Lynch Bages is a blend of 60% Cabernet Sauvignon and 40% Merlot. This wine has matured in 2nd year Barrique. In the glass it has a dark ruby red color with a purple tinge. The 2018 Echo de Lynch Bages emerges seductively from the glass with fragrant notes of candied violets, rose hips and fragrant earth over a core of blackberries, black currants and chocolate with some mineral notes. On the palate, the wine is full, rich, wonderfully concentrated and good structured, it has a firm backbone of firm, grainy tannins and good freshness with a long finish. From the wonderful year 2020.

From: Thrice Is Nice: Bordeaux 2020 in Bottle (Feb 2023)
The 2020 Echo de Lynch-Bages has certainly tightened up since I tasted it from barrel, now more black fruit coming through, graphite and pressed flowers. The palate is medium-bodied with succulent tannins, slightly grainy in texture, quite saline towards the finish, sleek and poised. It will require just a couple of years in bottle.

The founder of Lynch-Bages is the Irish John Lynch who settled in Bordeaux in the 17th century. The village of Bages is home to the château. Since 1933, Lynch-Bages has been run by the Cazes family, an institution in the Médoc and a famous name in the world of wine. Third generation André Cazes was mayor of the municipality of Pauillac from 1947 to 1991. His son Jean-Michel has been running the family domain for several decades. His motto is; "great wine in search of the absolute". Given the appreciation for and status of Lynch-Bages, this 'absolute' has been reasonably achieved. Officially the château has the status of 5th Grand Cru Classé, but unofficially it is counted among the greatest of the Médoc. The other parts of the family business can also be described as very successful. Cordeillan-Bages, winery, hotel and best dining in the surrounding area and restaurant / caterer Le Chapon Fin in Bordeaux are good examples of this. Father André founded the Commanderie du Bontemps de Médoc in the late 1940s and Jean-Michel can call himself the founder of the École du Bordeaux. In short, an eventful family in the world of wine.
