Château de Fonbel 2025 reveals another side of Saint-Émilion. Less broad and powerful, but rather refined, spicy, and remarkably fresh. Under the guidance of the Vauthier family of Château Ausone, a Saint-Émilion Grand Cru emerges here with character, precision, and a surprisingly distinctive signature.

Château de Fonbel

Château de Fonbel has been owned by the Vauthier family, known for the iconic Château Ausone, since 1971. While Ausone belongs to the absolute elite of Saint-Émilion, Fonbel serves as a place for innovation and experimentation. The estate is described by the family themselves as a kind of “jardin d'essai,” a testing ground where different grape varieties, terroirs, and vinification methods come together.

The 16-hectare estate is situated at the foot of the slopes south of Saint-Émilion and consists of a mosaic of sandy, clay, and gravel soils. Notable is the use of Carménère, a grape variety rarely found in Bordeaux anymore. It is precisely this grape that gives Fonbel its recognizable spiciness and a distinct character within Saint-Émilion. You can find more information about the château under the Winery tab.

Origin and terroir

The vineyards of Château de Fonbel are situated on various soil types of sand, clay-sand, and gravel. This variation results in a wine with tension and complexity, where freshness and elegance take center stage. The vines have an average age of approximately 30 years and benefit from a terroir that proved well-equipped to withstand the warm conditions of 2025.

The growing season was warm and relatively dry, but without major stress on the vines. According to the Vauthier family, early water stress actually resulted in small grapes with extra concentration, while freshness was preserved. The early harvest was notable, with some plots being picked as early as the beginning of September. The Carménère was harvested exceptionally early and, according to the château, immediately displayed great finesse and freshness.

Grapes and vinification

The blend of Château de Fonbel 2025 consists of 60% Merlot, 30% Cabernet Sauvignon, 5% Cabernet Franc, and 5% Carménère. It is this last grape, in particular, that makes Fonbel special. Carménère adds subtle spiciness, tension, and a light camphor-like freshness, creating a style that clearly distinguishes it from many other Saint-Émilions.

The grapes were harvested plot by plot between September 9 and 23 and underwent careful selection for density. Vinification took place in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks with gentle extraction to preserve finesse and aromatic precision. The wine ages for approximately 18 months in tanks and partly in wood for about a third of the production. Furthermore, Château de Fonbel is in the process of converting to organic farming.

Style and taste profile

Château de Fonbel 2025 displays a strikingly pure and energetic style. Expect aromas of ripe red and black fruits, complemented by notes of liquorice, spices, and the subtle spiciness characteristic of Carménère. The wine has a strikingly linear style, refined rather than broad, with great tension and precision.

On the palate, the wine combines ripe fruit with fresh energy. The texture remains refined and lively, while spicy nuances and elegant minerality provide length. The finish is tight, clean, and remarkably persistent. Where some Saint-Émilions emphasize richness and volume, Fonbel opts for freshness, drinkability, and elegance.

A different style Saint-Émilion

Château de Fonbel 2025 demonstrates that Saint-Émilion is not always about power and concentration. Thanks to the special blend with Carménère, the precise vinification, and the influence of the Vauthier family, a wine emerges that feels linear rather than rich, with striking spiciness and plenty of freshness. It is precisely this distinctive style that makes Fonbel interesting for lovers of refined Bordeaux with a slightly more modern energy.

Owned by the Vauthier family since 1971, Château de Fonbel has received special attention, because its vineyard is a test-bed for Château Ausone and its second wine, Chapelle d’Ausone.

Diversity of Cepage

Lovers of their job as winegrowers, Alain Vauthier and his daughter Pauline apply exacting high standards and technical know-how to this estate located on the Saint-Émilion plain. Not far south of the village, Château de Fonbel covers 16 hectares where the Merlot, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Carmenère – that old Bordeaux grape variety – and Petit Verdot find their chosen land on sandy-clay, gravel or simply sandy soils. The wine here is produced with great precision, both in the vineyard and in the cellar.

An elegant and subtle Wine

Depending on the vintage, part of the wine is vinified in temperature-controlled stainless-steel tanks and then goes into barrel to give lightness, elegance and flavour. The Château de Fonbel blend always contains around 85% Merlot, complemented by the other grape varieties, allowing a wide range of blending possibilities. Challengers by nature, and benefiting from certain innovations before their illustrious neighbours, the estate’s wines express their fruit, elegance and subtlety with well-integrated tannins that make them easy to drink in their youth.

The good balance and freshness - which the wine has drawn from the soil - also give it great ageing potential. It is tempered by the touch of Carmenère, reflected in spicy or liquorice notes.
