2020 Casa Rojo Tokyo Gomez-Rojo La Malpagada

The Tokyo Gomez-Rojo La Malpagada is a white wine from the Ribera del Duero. Made from Albillo, which is the permitted white grape that can be called a white Ribera Duero wine according to appellation regulations. White wines from the Ribera del Duero are very scarce but very beautiful. The albillo mayor grapes come from small (very) old vineyards spread across the provinces of Soria and Burgos. The 2020 vintage was an excellent vintage in La Ribera del Duero. A mild and violent winter gave way to a mild spring that led to a very rapid growth of vegetation, and finally the warm and dry summer slowed down the ripening of the grapes, namely in the oldest vineyards with deep roots. The grapes are fermented in concrete for more than 6 months and then aged on the lees in new French oak barrels of 225 liters. 15% of the total is fermented in barrels that come into contact with the skins and this explains the golden color.

The Tokyo Gomez-Rojo La Malpagada has an attractive golden color in the glass, partly due to the barrel maturation and skin contact. This white Ribera del Duero has an aromatic and complex nose, with primary aromas of stone fruit, especially peach, but also more complex, fermentative and evolutionary aromas, such as bakery aromas, brioche and sweet honey notes. On the palate it is creamy with a lot of volume but with very polished tannins and an acidity that gives it balance and invites you to continue enjoying it. The wine can age beautifully and then acquires a different, more complex character with a light sherry note.
