Description
Around 18,000 bottles are produced annually. An intoxicating bouquet with notes of ripe red berries, aniseed, mocha and tantalizing fresh flowers. Smooth and sweet on entry, then more structured in the middle, with deep, mineral-accented dried strawberry and cherry liqueur flavors. The taste is very complex full of dark ripe fruit (plums and berries), spices and chocolate. All this fruit violence is supported by fresh acidity and juicy ripe tannins. Takes a spicy turn with a long juicy finish. Elegance and power characterize this grenache/garnacha wine. Excellent value for money and year-in-year-out one of the highest rated wines on Vivino.
ABOUT ALTO MONCAYO
Bodegas Alto Moncayo is a winery located in the Campo de Borja Denominación de Origen (DO, wine quality standard) area. It was founded in 2002 with the aim of making it a world reference for the highest quality Garnacha wines made from indigenous grape varieties. The bodega is located in the highest part of the town of Borja, about 500 meters above sea level. Due to the proximity of Mount Moncayo, the climate here is particularly cool and dry continental. The indigenous Garnacha grapes of Alto Moncayo, together with the microclimate to which they are exposed, the soil type, the orientation and the professional treatment, form the authentic indigenous terroir, an interaction that produces wines that are unique and distinctive in the world. The ancient Garnacha varieties are found on the foothills of the Glacis, the mountains of Ainzón, Fuendejalón and Tabuenca. These are very stony, with light additions of limestone, marl, dolomite, quartzite and slate. These are highly permeable soils that allow water to seep through and retain water in the deeper layers of clay. Read more in the Tab: Winery.

Their more approachable wine is the 2016 Veratón, produced exclusively with Garnacha grapes from vines planted in the 1970s and 1980s and fermented with neutral yeasts and matured in new and second use French and American oak barrel for 16 months. This already sets the tone of the house style with plenty of spicy, toasty and smoky aromas, vanilla, coconut, cinnamon, a creamy touch and a round and lush palate with 15% alcohol, abundant tannins and pungent flavors, mostly oak related. It's clean and has a warm and long finish marked by the alcohol. It's difficult to see the variety with all this oak. For fans of ripe oaky reds. 87,600 bottles. It was bottled in July 2018. It seems to evolve quite slowly.
Alto Moncayo is the Campo de Borja project linked to Borsao and made famous by Australian consultant Chris Ringland. It's a 125,000- to 155,000-bottle winery. They have just finished giving the last touches to the tasting room and visiting area of the winery they started building in 2010. The style of the wines is powerful, ripe, concentrated and oaky.

Brilliant purple. Intensely perfumed, spice-tinged black and blue fruits, vanilla, candied flowers and cola on the nose, along with a smoky element that builds with air. Broad and fleshy on entry, offering juicy cherry cola, blueberry and mocha flavors sharpened by a jolt of spicy white pepper. Strongly echoes the blue fruit and spice notes on the very long, focused finish, which features lingering floral and mineral flourishes.

Consulting winemaker Chris Ringland’s style is on full display here. Ringland made his name over the last four decades producing some of Australia’s richest and most coveted wines. Regardless of vintage, these Garnachas, made from the estate’s 92 hectares of very old vines are some of if not the most expressive, massively fruit-driven and lush expressions of Campo de Borja, where there’s no shortage of flamboyant wines. The Aquilon is often the wine of the vintage for the DO and the entry-level Veraton bottling delivers remarkable value.

The Australian superstar, winemaker Chris Ringland, who scores at Parker between 95 and 100/100 with his own wine in Barossa Valley (Australia), has also had a foothold on European soil for several years. In addition to his input on El Nido and Clio in Jumilla and La Atalaya in Almansa, he also vinifies on Alto Moncayo in Campo de Borja. It is no coincidence that he was consulted for this magnificent and unique project.
Bodegas Alto Moncayo is owned by Jorge Ordonez (the main importer of Spanish wines in the United States). The beautiful wines are based on old Grenache, a grape variety that Ringland is familiar with in South Australia. The Aquilon top wine is a super selection of the very best of the domain, and only a small amount available. The Alto Moncayo shows a sturdy yet elegant Garnacha with a lot of allure. In turn, Veraton shares the same style as his big brothers Aquilon and Alto Moncayo, albeit in a slightly more accessible version. It is almost incredible that this unique Grenache was previously mixed with other grape varieties in commercial blends. Once again a sample of top quality from fascinating Spain. The vineyards are among the oldest in the region, located on the slopes of the majestic Moncayo, from which very fine top wines are produced based on the Grenache grape. Power, sophistication and complexity, all this is confirmed year by year by wine critics who give rave reviews for these great wines
