Description
This vineyard of the Eguren family is located in La Veguilla and is 16.5 ha in size. The Amancio is a cuvée from four best plots in San Vicente de la Sonsierra. The best grapes are selected from the plots of these vineyards and only these are allowed in the famous amancio. The soil consists of calcareous clay soil with small round limestones on the surface. The vineyard has an exceptionally low production, but the grapes are of excellent quality. The vineyards are fertilized organically and wines are produced organically. The grapes are carefully destemmed by hand and undergo a very strict selection process. A pre-fermentation by cold soaking of 6 days. Fermentation takes place in 5 hectolitre oak barrels. The grapes are pressed with the feet twice a day during pre-fermentation. The malolactic fermentation takes place in new French oak barrels (Bordeaux type) for 24 months and then at least 6-12 months of bottle aging.
The Amancio from Sierra Cantabria has an intense cherry color in the glass. In the nose, the Amancio has beautiful notes of ripe fruit, blackberry, black cherry, black currant and fig, with mineral and liquorice undertones and a dark roasted aroma. On the palate, this powerful red wine is very intense, expressive, soft and supple in textures and concentrated. The wine has beautiful smoky tones due to the new French oak and because only the best fruit is allowed in this top wine due to the very low yield. The mouth is filled with the taste of fruit and a fine wood structure, well integrated and in perfect balance. Velvety on the palate. Excellent balance between the acidity and the ripe tannin with a very long finish. The wine always gets great high ratings from Tanzer, Penin and Parker.
Parker writes in his review: " Surprisingly, the 2019 Amancio feels fresher, younger and with more integrated oak and finer tannins than the 2018 I tasted alongside it, a bit contradictory as the style of the vintages should normally mean the opposite. . It is medium to full-bodied, with fine tannins and nice balance. 5,000 bottles were filled" This is a beautiful 1.5 liter magnum of which only a handful have been made

Surprisingly enough, the 2019 Amancio feels fresher, younger and with more integrated oak and finer tannins than the 2018 I tasted next to it, a bit of a contradiction, because the style of the vintages should normally mean the opposite. It is medium to full-bodied, with fine tannins and nice balance. 5,000 bottles were filled in February 2022.
Sierra Cantabria is one of the projects from the Eguren family. They are trying to use only grapes from San Vicente de la Sonsierra, and they produce close to one million bottles.

The Spanish winery Sierra Cantabria was founded in 1957 by Guillermo Eguren and is one of Hermanos Eguren's beautiful wineries. Sierra Cantabria is located in the Rioja in a unique location between the River Ebro and the Sierra Cantabria mountain range. The Sierra Cantabria Mountains (1200m.) And the River Ebro (350m.) Provide a special microclimate with Mediterranean and continental features - mild winters and mild summers, unique to wine growing.
On the other hand, the thermal summer jump (intense heat during the day with fresh night temperatures) increases the polyphenol content, which makes for excellent quality wines with a distinctive character.
The vineyards of Bodega Sierra Cantabria are mainly located in the towns of San Vicente de la Sonsierra, Labastida and Laguardia, an area very well known for wine growing.
The Tempranillo variety predominates, along with small amounts of Garnacha, Viura and 'Hairy Tempranillo', all of which are grown in vineyards about 35 years old, although there are also plots up to 70 years old.The harvest is carried out by hand every year, paying special attention to the rigorous selection of the grapes that are the soul of the wine, in optimal condition and in perfect ripening conditions. The careful harvest is followed by a thorough separation of the bunches, which is done on a selection table at the entrance of the winery. Winemaking is aimed at minimal intervention in the winery to fully respect the character of the terroir
