The Harlan family has been wine growers in California's Napa Valley since the late 1970s. Their first effort, Harlan Estate, has established an international benchmark for the art of viticulture over the course of nearly four decades. It was in the early years, in the early 1980s, that H. William Harlan discovered another place - an isolated area - while hiking along Oakville's southwest ridge. The hidden expanse touched him deeply, but remained elusive until much later, when the Harlan family finally acquired it in 2008. The second generations of both the family and the winemaking team came together at this time to explore and work with the land, they began to make discoveries of their own. At the heart of this wild terrain they found a powerful geological convergence that had shaped the land's steep, rugged topography and created the conditions for a wholly exotic wine-growing environment. Over time, they discovered that the dramatic landscape – just beyond the edge of the known – would slowly change them and ultimately inspire a new venture: Promontory. Eleven hectares of the original vineyard have been preserved due to the interesting age of these Cabernets. Another 16 hectares are still being replanted per plot.
The Promontory wines may only be offered to Private customers and the catering industry. In the Tab: Appendix you will find a nice presentation about Promontory.
FYI, Promontory has won two major awards (BWW Competition 2021)
• Best new winery in the world
• Best winemaker in the world (Cory Empting)
Jeb Dunnuck gave 100/100.
“Lastly, the 2019 Promontory matches the perfect 2016 from this estate and is legendary stuff. Ripe black fruits, chocolate, lead pencil shaving, roasted herbs, and tobacco are just some of its nuances, and this beauty hits the palate with full-bodied richness, a deep, layered, concentrated mid-palate, ultra-fine tannins, and an incredible finish. It doesn't get any better. This has the class of a First Growth from Bordeaux paired with a Napa sense of texture and fruit. It will evolve for 40-50 years”.
Lisa Perrotti-Brown gift 100/100.
“The 2019 Promontory has a deep garnet-purple color. It is quite closed at the moment, needing a little swirling to reveal notes of crushed rocks, garrigue, iron ore, and lavender, leading to a core of black cherries, redcurrant jelly, and fresh blackcurrants, with a hint of mossy tree bark. The medium to full-bodied palate is so tightly wound, delivering multi-layered black and red berries with mineral and earthy sparks, supported by fine-grained tannins, finishing long and fragrant”.
James Suckling gave 99/100.
“Purple-fruit, dark-licorice and conifer aromas follow through to a medium to full body with firmness and a linear flow that goes on for minutes. Racy tannins and focus. Give this until at least 2028”.
Wine Advocate gift 97/100.
“The 2019 Promontory offers up slightly darker cherries than the red-fruited 2018, couched in a bed of foresty-minty notes and underpinned by crushed stone. At this stage, it looks more intense but otherwise similar to the excellent 2018, finishing long, silky and elegant, with mouthwatering freshness. Collectors should enjoy comparing the two years for decades to come”.

At this stage, it looks more intense but otherwise similar to the excellent 2018, finishing long, silky and elegant, with mouthwatering freshness. Collectors should enjoy comparing the two years for decades to come.
The newest of the Harlan-related projects, Promontory is based on an 840-acre parcel of largely forested hills located south of Harlan Estate. Purchased in 2008, it's virtually a valley unto itself, with fewer than 84 acres under vine. The winery itself is situated just north of Harlan. From a slightly higher elevation and virtually surrounded by nature, the wine is more taut and structured, accentuated by its élevage in Austrian oak foudres from Stockinger, which range from 1000 to 5000 liters in volume. This is always released later than the other Harlan projects, with the 2019 slated for release in March 2023. Availability at retail is extremely limited, so the best option is to sign up for the mailing list. Unlike Harlan Estate and Bond, Promontory does offer visits by appointment, so at least there is a chance to try the wine for yourself.

From: The 2021 Napa Valley Cabernets, Part One (Dec 2023)
The 2019 Promontory is just as impressive as it always has been. Vertical in structure, with tremendous depth, the 2019 possesses notable textural intensity and tons of volume. Black cherry, plum, licorice, mocha, new leather and espresso are all amplified. Time has softened some of the Promontory edges. The 2019 is still very young, but it has come together very nicely.
- By Antonio Galloni on December 2023
This is an intriguing set of wines from Promontory. David Cilli is one of the most talented winemakers in Napa Valley. His 2019 is once again ravishing, while the 2020 shows just how little he had to work with in this very challenging vintage. I also had an opportunity to taste the two most recent vintages of Penultimate, the more accessible of the two wines off this stunning property in the Mayacamas Mountains.

From: Napa Valley: The Frantic 2020s & Stunning 2021s (Feb 2023)
The 2019 Promontory is one of the most exuberant wines I have tasted off this property. Dense and explosive, the 2019 possesses remarkable depth and textural resonance. Succulent dark cherry, espresso, new leather, spice and mocha are pushed forward. The 2019 is a rare Promontory that will drink well right out of the gate.
- By Antonio Galloni on October 2022
Promontory is on a slightly later release schedule than Harlan Estate and Bond, so these are the current releases. Winemaker David Cilli has done a tremendous job in giving the Promontory Cabernet a great deal of finesse, especially over the last few years. Although I can’t say it for certain, because I don’t know, my strong impression is that his wines have notably influenced the recent stylistic direction at Harlan Estate and Bond.
