Description
The Mazzei 2020 Concerto di Fonterutoli is a blend of 80% Sangiovese and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon from a cool vineyard at an altitude of 350 meters. It is surrounded on three sides by dense forests. The role of the forest, especially in the Chianti hills, is increasingly appreciated as we face hot summers and climate change. The Concerto is meaty and juicy with black cherries, plums, cardamom spice and grilled rosemary. In the mouth flavors of chocolate, hazelnut, blackberry and cherry. The robust and black fruit profile of the wine is an ideal accompaniment to meat on the grill. The tannins are evident, but they also show elegant restraint so as not to overpower the flavors of your dish.
The Mazzei Concerto di Fonterutoli offers an authentic Tuscan character with the robust personality and power to combine with a classic T-bone bistecca alla Fiorentina. The 2020 Concerto has received unanimous high scores from the international wine press.

It is surrounded by thick forests on three sides. The role of the forest especially in the hills of Chianti is becoming ever more appreciated as we face hot summers and climate change. This wine remains focused and tight with wild berry, blackcurrant, grilled herb, spice and dark mineral tones. To the palate, there is plenty of sweet fruit followed by nicely integrated, dry tannins.

An extremely aromatic red with currants, flowers and spices, following through to a full-bodied yet so crunchy and juicy palate with crushed blackberries and raspberries. Citrusy acidity. Bright and agile. Drink or hold.

From: Chianti Classico & Neighbors: Looking at the 2020s and 2019s (Jul 2022)
The 2020 Concerto di Fonterutoli is bright and punchy, with terrific freshness and tons of nuance. Plum, pomegranate, spice, new leather and blood orange are front and center. The 2020 is a gorgeous wine that captures the essence of the house style beautifully. Today, the purity of the fruit really jumps out of the glass. Superb.

Filippo Mazzei showed me a wide range of wines this year. I was most impressed by the Concerto, the estate’s Cabernet Sauvignon/Sangiovese blend, and Siepi, the Merlot/Sangiovese that has long been the flagship. The Gran Seleziones, all 2019s, show the lighter structure of the year. Among the 2019s, I especially like the Chianti Classico Riserva Ser Lapo, which is once again a standout.
