2021 Mauro

The Mauro is a sparkling, garnet red wine with soft red fruit in the aroma and hints of light wood aging, has a full but elegant taste, juicy, with velvety tannins and is beautifully balanced. The grapes for this wine are picked by hand and come from the vineyards near Tudela de Duero (30 ha) and Santibáñez de Valcorba (15 ha). Fermentation and maturation for 16 months in 225 liter barriques of mainly French oak, 25% is American oak. 20% of the barrels are renewed annually. The aim is to make balanced wines, with the right balance between fruit and wood. Mauro is known and praised for its elegance and refinement. Not a blockbuster but almost a bit Bordeaux-like, but anyway Mariano Garcia of Vega Sicilia is at the helm here.

Bodegas Mauro was founded in 1980 by Mariano García, former winemaker of Vega Sicilia. His sons Alberto and Eduardo also work in the company, while nephew Isaac Fernández is the oenologist. The vineyards, totaling 45 ha, are located just outside (to the west) of the DO Ribera del Duero. The location has a continental climate with Atlantic influences. The soil contains a lot of lime and is very porous. The vines are 20-40 years old, in the Cueva Baja vineyard of 3 hectares almost 100 years old. Every year, around 210,000 bottles come from the beautiful cellars, which indicates a low average to low yield per hectare, namely 35 hl. Mauro has 950 barriques of 225 liters of mainly French oak, 25% is of American oak. Every year, 20% is renewed. Mauro has an enormous reputation, the wines belong to the international top. In 2004 a new Bodega was built just outside the busy town of Tudela de Duero to further increase quality and improve the accessibility of the company.

The soils in Tudela de Duero are predominantly sandy and clayey, with a limestone subsoil. This contributes to the mineral expression and finesse of the wines. The area has a continental climate with large temperature differences between day and night. This promotes a slow ripening of the grapes, resulting in concentrated aromas and a natural acidity . The vineyards are located at an altitude of 700-900 meters above sea level, which adds an extra dimension of freshness to the wines.
