Description
History of Le Chiuse and the Montalcino region
Le Chiuse is a family-owned winery in Montalcino, one of Tuscany's most respected wine regions. Run by the Conti family, the winery is known for its organic and traditional production methods. Montalcino itself is famous for its Brunello wines, made from the Sangiovese grape, on hilly, chalky soils and a Mediterranean climate. Warm days and cool nights create an optimal balance of ripe fruit, acidity, and fine tannins.
About the 2019 Le Chiuse Brunello di Montalcino
The 2019 Brunello from Le Chiuse displays a classic style: elegant, powerful, and refined. It's a wine that needs time to fully develop and is particularly rewarding for those with the patience to age. The wine combines depth with a fresh acidity, making it both immediately appealing and with the potential to gain complexity over time.
Grapes, harvest and vinification
This Brunello is made from 100% Sangiovese grapes, carefully hand-picked. Fermentation takes place in large wooden barrels, contributing to a concentrated aromatic structure. After fermentation, the wine is aged extensively in Slavonian oak barrels, allowing the tannins to refine and the palate to develop a harmonious balance of fruit, spice, and earthy notes. Only a limited edition of 21,800 bottles of this vintage was produced, emphasizing its exclusivity. Color, smell and taste of the wine
In the glass, the 2019 Le Chiuse Brunello has a deep ruby red color with a subtle purple rim. The aroma is initially restrained, with notes of dark fruit, wet stone, and a light smokiness, which slowly unfold after decanting. On the palate, the wine combines freshness with ripe, fine tannins and elegant balance. Flavors of cherry, plum, and light earthiness create a complex and layered palate, while the finish remains long and smooth, with a subtle invitation for further cellaring.
Storage potential and serving tips
This Brunello demands patience and will develop optimally between 2026 and 2042. The wine opens slowly and needs time to reveal its aromatic richness. Decant at least an hour before serving and pour into large glasses at 18-20°C to fully experience the delicate balance of fruit, acidity, and tannins.

The organic Le Chiuse 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is shy to open and will require more time in your cellar before it hits its optimal drinking window. In its current stage, it shows dark fruit, smoky asphalt and wet stone. The initial impact is one of soothing darkness and aromatic concentration; however, the wine lightens up considerably on the palate with fresh acidity and fine tannins. This is a classic case of a Brunello that just needs more time to flesh out. Given its traditional and elegant personality today, it will improve tomorrow. Le Chiuse made 21,800 bottles this year.
Le Chiuse is one of the few estates to make a late-release wine that comes to market 10 years after the harvest. I'm taking about the Brunello di Montalcino Riserva Diecianni (named "10 years" in Italian). Sadly, the 2014 vintage was never produced due to soggy and cold weather in that vintage.

Black cherries with slate and orange peel as well as flowers on the nose. Full-bodied with very well integrated tannins that show serious structure and power. Impressive length and focus. Need three to four years to come out of its tightly wound state. From organically grown grapes. One of the best from here. Try after 2027.

From: Buckle Your Seatbelts: 2019 Brunello and 2021 Rosso di Montalcino (Dec 2023)
The 2019 Brunello di Montalcino is just a baby today, youthfully coiled and understated, with dusty dried flowers and nuanced violet pastille complementing wild strawberries and autumnal spice. It sweeps across the palate, lifted and refined, with a core of vividly ripe red and blue fruits that swirl throughout as vibrant acidity maintains balance despite gripping tannins that mount toward the close. This leaves a coating primary concentration as it finishes structured and long yet remarkably pure, ending with lingering licorice hints. Breathtaking.
- By Eric Guido on November 2023
Lorenzo Magnelli of Le Chiuse continues to show the prestige of their terroir in their new 2019 Brunello. Its purity and balance alone are something to behold, yet it will take some time before this northern Montalcino beauty is ready to reveal all of its charms. The Le Chiuse vineyards are located in the north, a single block that sits between Montalcino and Montosoli. It’s a unique site with a steep, hillside exposition at 330 meters of elevation, rich in schist, stones and fossils with water-retaining clay only two meters below.

Wijnhuis
waarom le chiuse zo gewild is
