Description
the story behind Hundred Acre Vineyard
Hundred Acre is a small, highly selective winery in Napa Valley. The owner operates with a clear vision. Only perfectly ripe grapes from three of their own vineyards are used. The emphasis is on exceptional quality Cabernet Sauvignon. The vineyards are located in St. Helena, Howell Mountain, and Calistoga. Each location has its own unique soil structure and microclimate. The combination of altitude, cool nights, and poor soils produces grapes with high concentration, ripe tannins, and aromatic precision.
Hundred Acre works with low yields, separate vinification of each plot, and careful barrel selection. The estate's style is intense, rich, layered, and always focused on texture and balance. The wines often only become fully accessible after years and develop further in the bottle.
characteristics of Hundred Acre Cabernet Sauvignon Wraith 2019
The 2019 Wraith displays a combination of ripeness, tension, and finesse. According to The Wine Advocate (source: The Wine Advocate, score 98), the wine opens with cherry, cassis, a light spicy note, and a subtle herbal character. Underneath, earthy notes, cigar box, and dark forest floor emerge. The structure is full and creamy, with a soft, velvety texture. The wine finishes long, rich, and silky.
The review emphasizes that the 2019 Wraith is a blend that encapsulates the character of the vintage. The reviewer calls it "luscious stuff" and points out the risk of finding it hard to resist. The wine has a recommended drinking window of 2025 to 2040.
the three vineyards behind Wraith
Morgan's Way is located at the foot of Howell Mountain and boasts soils of clay and volcanic rock. This combination keeps the roots cool and creates elegance and balance in the final wine.
Ark Vineyard is situated higher up on Howell Mountain. This parcel has a complex soil of ancient sediment, volcanic debris, and bedrock. The planting density is high, and the individual blocks are harvested and vinified separately. Ark wines are powerful and precise.
Few and Far Between is located in Calistoga, on volcanic soil containing fragments of Mount St. Helena. The vineyard is situated in a cool location and benefits from fresh winds from the Chalk Hill Gap. The wine from this parcel displays ripe fruit, spice, and a powerful structure. This is the estate's smallest parcel.
the 2019 harvest year and the circumstances
The winemaker describes 2019 as "almost too perfect." The summer was uneventful, with ample warmth and no extreme conditions. The days were warm, the nights cool. As a result, the grapes ripened slowly and evenly. The aromatic structure was optimal, as was the phenolic ripeness. The harvest took place under ideal conditions, yielding grapes with a perfect balance of sugar, acidity, and tannin.
These conditions produce a wine that is simultaneously powerful, creamy, fresh, and layered. The structure of the 2019 vintage makes the wines accessible relatively early, without losing any ageing potential.
vinification and maturation of the 2019 Wraith
The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously selected. Each plot is vinified separately. Fermentation takes place in small, temperature-controlled tanks. The wine undergoes a long maceration to extract color, aromas, and tannins. After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak, using a combination of new and used wood. The barrels are tasted individually, and only the finest barrels make the final blend.
The maturation produces soft tannins, a broad texture, and a combination of black fruit, earth, and cigar box notes. The balance between fruit and structure gives the wine considerable length and complexity.
color, smell and taste of the Wraith 2019
The color is deep ruby with an almost black core. The aroma reveals cassis, black cherry, a touch of spice, earth, and tobacco. Swirling reveals notes of cedar, chocolate, and forest floor. The palate is full and creamy. The tannins are velvety and complement the ripe fruit notes beautifully. The finish is long, rounded, and silky, with recurring red fruit and subtle spice.
storage potential and development
The 2019 Wraith is already approachable but will continue to develop over the coming years. The drinking window begins in 2025 and runs until 2045. With aging, the wine gains depth, more complex earthy notes, and a softer structure. The wine's concentration and balanced acidity and tannins offer excellent conditions for long-term aging.

The 2019 Cabernet Sauvignon Wraith is a subtle amalgam of the three single-vineyard wines, showcasing a faint herbal streak, mixed cherries and cassis fruit, with deep undercurrents of loamy earth and cigar box shadings. Full-bodied, plush and creamy-textured, it finishes long and velvety. Just luscious stuff—good luck keeping your hands off it!
One of the highlights of my last trip to Napa was having the opportunity to renew acquaintances with Jayson Woodbridge. I had previously met him when Hundred Acre was producing a Barossa Valley Shiraz, but it had been a number of years since our paths had crossed. We met at his office in downtown St. Helena to taste through two dozen bottled wines under the Summer Dreams, Fortunate Son and Hundred Acre labels. Summer Dreams and Fortunate Son have their own separate write-ups; this producer note focuses on Hundred Acre.
The heart of Hundred Acre is the three estate vineyards Woodbridge bottles separately. Kayli Morgan (known as Morgan's Way from the 2019 vintage) is located toward the base of Howell Mountain, at too low an elevation to be included in that AVA. According to Woodbridge, it's a dome of clay, volcanic gravel and obsidian. "It's the most elegant of the wines because the clay keeps the vines cool," he said. Because of the clay content, he considers the site largely immune to Napa's troublesome heat spikes.
Ark is higher on Howell Mountain. Woodbridge describes it as an upthrown block with some beachfront and volcanic sediments, a 100-million-year sequence turned on its side. Planted in nine blocks, with two different rootstocks, each of those 18 parcels is picked separately, fermented separately and barreled separately.
Few and Far Between is located in Calistoga, at Woodbridge's Napa Valley home. It consists of highly volcanic soils, really just fragments of blast rock from Mount St. Helena, he says. Located upslope from the Eisele Vineyard, it faces the Chalk Hill gap, so it gets the cooling wind, creating a huge diurnal difference, according to Woodbridge. At just under five acres, it's the smallest of his vineyards and the only one to include something other than Cabernet Sauvignon (approximately 10% Cabernet Franc).
The other wines under the Hundred Acre moniker all derive from these three holdings. Dark Ark is a selection of the darkest, densest lots from Ark; Deep Time is a selection chosen for extended barrel maturation; Wraith is a blend of the three sites, a wine that's meant to provide a picture of the vintage more than a particular vineyard or portion of the valley.
Recent vintages have had their share of ups and downs for Woodbridge.
"I think 2018 was a legendary vintage," he says. "In 2017 we had a little fire—2018 then was so easy, so natural, the fruit just matured slowly and beautifully. The problem was that 2019 was even more wonderful. The most bucolic kind of vintage. It was almost like it was too good. I felt this great sense of trepidation. I went to the most remote part of New Zealand after harvest. I was stuck in New Zealand for 20 months."
While Woodbridge was away on that COVID-19-enforced break, the 2020 fires cost him "both my forests, 15% of my vineyards and the whole vintage."
The outspoken Woodbridge has strong opinions on winemaking—and on how his own wines measure up. When I asked him what other Napa wines he admired, he hesitated a bit.
"It's hard because I don't really view it that way, " Woodbridge said. "I don't compare Hundred Acre on the local field. I think it is one of the greatest wines in the world. If I was going to have a single wine in California that I thought was worthy, it would be Abreu. Because I think Brad is a very good winemaker. But truthfully, I don't drink a lot of California Cabs.
"In the right vintages, I like Haut Brion, and I like Ausone, Bussola Amarone, there are a few great wines from Italy that I like. In certain years, even the most unlikely wines in California can be great. But the test is in the other years. Not everyone can make a great wine in an average year. The wine takes absolute priority over everything. You can never take into account finances when you're deciding your picks.
"When I'm making it, it has to be absolutely right. It's not a business, it's a holy quest. It's a business for a lot of other people, but not for me."
