Hacienda Monasterio Winery
Hacienda Monasterio is one of the leading estates in Ribera del Duero and has been fully organic since 2015. The estate boasts a wide variety of soils and plots, ensuring precision in its blends. The style is powerful yet controlled, emphasizing balance, ripeness, and aging potential. Day-to-day management is increasingly being taken over by the next generation, while maintaining the original vision.

Region, climate and location
The vineyards are located in Ribera del Duero at altitude, where large temperature variations between day and night contribute to aromatic intensity and freshness. The 2020 vintage was warmer than 2021, but cooler than the subsequent years of 2022 and 2023. These conditions resulted in ripe fruit that retained sufficient acidity, ensuring both power and elegance.
Vineyards
The 2020 Reserva comes from two select plots. The Tempranillo comes primarily from El Picón, directly below the winery, where the soils are very light and rich in limestone. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from gravel and sandy soils. This combination contributes to the structure, tension, and depth.
Grape varieties and composition
The blend consists of 80 percent Tempranillo and 20 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. Compared to the regular Hacienda Monasterio, the Reserva contains a slightly higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, which provides additional structure, length, and aging potential. Merlot is no longer used in the blend.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The grapes were harvested by hand and rigorously selected. Vinification focuses on controlled extraction to maintain a balance of power and finesse. Maturation took place in oak barrels containing a maximum of 40 percent new wood. Cabernet Sauvignon integrates the new wood particularly well here, contributing to complexity without overpowering the fruit. The wine was bottled in July 2023. Production amounts to approximately 50,000 bottles.

The 2020 Reserva was produced with a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, a selection of two plots, mostly from the zone of El Picón below the winery where the soils are very white and rich in limestone and the Cabernet from the gravel and sandy soils. 2020 was a little warmer than 2021 but cooler than the following years, 2022 and 2023. This is always a very serious wine, and it has ripeness and 14.5% alcohol but very good balance and harmony, with enough freshness and acidity to come through as a powerful but elegant. The differences between this and the regular Hacienda Monasterio are basically the origin, the plots and a slightly higher percentage of Cabernet and perhaps a little more new oak (no more than 40%), because the Cabernet Sauvignon from Hacienda Monasterio takes the new oak very well compared with Tempranillo, because the grape ripens very well and integrates the oak very well. It is full-bodied, powerful and elegant, with stuffing and balance to develop nicely in bottle. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023.
I met again with Carlos del Río Jr. to taste the wines from Hacienda Monasterio, Montecastro and his personal family project. As I mentioned last time, he is slowly taking the reins of Hacienda Monasterio, both from his father and from his father-in-law (Peter Sisseck!), starting with the sales side.
They got rid of the Merlot (it works once every 10 years!) and replaced it with Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon and are experimenting with foudres and oak vats. They have 98 hectares of vines—83% Tempranillo and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon—on 12 different soils, all certified organic since 2015. The idea here is to control the ripeness and alcohol in the wines as the grapes achieve ripeness earlier and earlier with climate change. Output averages 270,000 bottles per year.
2022 was a warm and concentrated vintage, and they also did a longer élevage. 2020 was fresher but also finished warm, and the ripeness was very good. 2019 was a very complete and powerful year.

They got rid of the Merlot (it works once every 10 years!) and replaced it with Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon and are experimenting with foudres and oak vats. They have 98 hectares of vines—83% Tempranillo and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon—on 12 different soils, all certified organic since 2015. Het domein Hacienda Monasterio ligt tussen Pesquera en Valbuena de Duero, in het hart van de Ribera del Duero. De oorsprong van het landgoed gaat terug tot de 19e eeuw, toen er al wijnbouw plaatsvond. In 1990 begon de moderne fase van Hacienda Monasterio, met een duidelijke focus op kwaliteit. Hacienda Monasterio Winery
Hacienda Monasterio is one of the leading estates in Ribera del Duero and has been fully organic since 2015. The estate boasts a wide variety of soils and plots, ensuring precision in its blends. The style is powerful yet controlled, emphasizing balance, ripeness, and aging potential. Day-to-day management is increasingly being taken over by the next generation, while maintaining the original vision.

Region, climate and location
The vineyards are located in Ribera del Duero at altitude, where large temperature variations between day and night contribute to aromatic intensity and freshness. The 2020 vintage was warmer than 2021, but cooler than the subsequent years of 2022 and 2023. These conditions resulted in ripe fruit that retained sufficient acidity, ensuring both power and elegance.
Vineyards
The 2020 Reserva comes from two select plots. The Tempranillo comes primarily from El Picón, directly below the winery, where the soils are very light and rich in limestone. The Cabernet Sauvignon comes from gravel and sandy soils. This combination contributes to the structure, tension, and depth.
Grape varieties and composition
The blend consists of 80 percent Tempranillo and 20 percent Cabernet Sauvignon. Compared to the regular Hacienda Monasterio, the Reserva contains a slightly higher proportion of Cabernet Sauvignon, which provides additional structure, length, and aging potential. Merlot is no longer used in the blend.
Harvest, vinification and maturation
The grapes were harvested by hand and rigorously selected. Vinification focuses on controlled extraction to maintain a balance of power and finesse. Maturation took place in oak barrels containing a maximum of 40 percent new wood. Cabernet Sauvignon integrates the new wood particularly well here, contributing to complexity without overpowering the fruit. The wine was bottled in July 2023. Production amounts to approximately 50,000 bottles.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a deep ruby red color. The aroma reveals ripe dark fruit such as black cherry and blackberry, complemented by notes of cedar, graphite, and subtle spice. The chalky soils lend a fresh, almost chalky undertone. On the palate, the wine is full-bodied and powerful, with 14.5 percent alcohol, yet remarkably well-balanced. Ripe tannins provide structure, while fresh acidity adds tension and drinkability. The overall finish is harmonious, with a long, precise finish that combines power and elegance.
Development and drinking window
The 2020 Hacienda Monasterio Reserva was awarded 95 points by Luis Gutiérrez of The Wine Advocate. The recommended drinking window runs from 2025 to 2035. Thanks to its balance of ripeness, structure, and freshness, the wine will continue to develop positively in the bottle in the coming years.

The 2020 Reserva was produced with a blend of 80% Tempranillo and 20% Cabernet Sauvignon, a selection of two plots, mostly from the zone of El Picón below the winery where the soils are very white and rich in limestone and the Cabernet from the gravel and sandy soils. 2020 was a little warmer than 2021 but cooler than the following years, 2022 and 2023. This is always a very serious wine, and it has ripeness and 14.5% alcohol but very good balance and harmony, with enough freshness and acidity to come through as a powerful but elegant. The differences between this and the regular Hacienda Monasterio are basically the origin, the plots and a slightly higher percentage of Cabernet and perhaps a little more new oak (no more than 40%), because the Cabernet Sauvignon from Hacienda Monasterio takes the new oak very well compared with Tempranillo, because the grape ripens very well and integrates the oak very well. It is full-bodied, powerful and elegant, with stuffing and balance to develop nicely in bottle. 50,000 bottles produced. It was bottled in July 2023.
I met again with Carlos del Río Jr. to taste the wines from Hacienda Monasterio, Montecastro and his personal family project. As I mentioned last time, he is slowly taking the reins of Hacienda Monasterio, both from his father and from his father-in-law (Peter Sisseck!), starting with the sales side.
They got rid of the Merlot (it works once every 10 years!) and replaced it with Tempranillo and Cabernet Sauvignon and are experimenting with foudres and oak vats. They have 98 hectares of vines—83% Tempranillo and 17% Cabernet Sauvignon—on 12 different soils, all certified organic since 2015. The idea here is to control the ripeness and alcohol in the wines as the grapes achieve ripeness earlier and earlier with climate change. Output averages 270,000 bottles per year.
2022 was a warm and concentrated vintage, and they also did a longer élevage. 2020 was fresher but also finished warm, and the ripeness was very good. 2019 was a very complete and powerful year.

Het domein Hacienda Monasterio ligt tussen Pesquera en Valbuena de Duero, in het hart van de Ribera del Duero. Het werd in de jaren negentig nieuw leven ingeblazen en kreeg al snel een internationale reputatie. Historie van Hacienda Monasterio
De oorsprong van het landgoed gaat terug tot de 19e eeuw, toen er al wijnbouw plaatsvond. In 1990 begon de moderne fase van Hacienda Monasterio, met een duidelijke focus op kwaliteit. Vanaf het begin werd Peter Sisseck betrokken als technisch directeur en wijnmaker. Dankzij zijn nauwgezette manier van werken groeide het domein in korte tijd uit tot een vaste waarde in Ribera del Duero. Vandaag de dag staan de wijnen bekend om hun balans tussen rijp fruit, structuur en elegantie.
Wijngaarden en druivenrassen
Het domein beslaat zo’n 160 hectare, waarvan ongeveer 78 hectare met wijnstokken is beplant. De bodems bestaan vooral uit kalksteen, klei en leem, een mix die de wijnen spanning en frisheid geeft. De druif Tempranillo, lokaal Tinto Fino genoemd, voert de boventoon. Daarnaast zijn er kleinere aanplanten van Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot en Malbec, die extra diepte en complexiteit toevoegen aan de blends. Alle wijngaarden worden biologisch beheerd, zonder gebruik van kunstmest of chemische herbiciden.
Klimaat in Ribera del Duero
Het klimaat van Ribera del Duero is continentaal, met hete zomers en koude winters. Overdag kan de temperatuur in de zomer hoog oplopen, terwijl de nachten sterk afkoelen. Die dagelijkse schommeling vertraagt de rijping en zorgt voor druiven met veel aroma, concentratie en tegelijk frisse zuren. De wijngaarden van Hacienda Monasterio liggen op een hoogte van circa 800 meter, waardoor de wijnen nog meer spanning en balans krijgen.
