Description
The road winds along the steep slopes of the mountains that connect the two villages of Falset and Porrera in the south-east of the Comarca Priorat in the province of Tarragona. Vineyards, Mediterranean pines and holm oaks provide colourful splashes of green and brown amidst the reddish hue that dominates this region. Behind a sharp bend appears our destination: the Ferrer Bobet vineyard, an impressive building that towers over the valley that surrounds it. Some have described it as a ship stranded among the vineyards, others as a hang glider, suspended on the edge of the abyss. In any case, it is the symbol of a project characterised by respect: respect for wine culture and the world of wine, respect for the lean region with a long tradition of wine-growing and finally respect for wine lovers. With this project, Ferrer and Bobet seek to produce a wine "that reflects the mineral essence that characterises these lands with purity and harmony"
The showpiece of Ferrer Bobet. This special wine deserves all the attention, A rich, juicy wine with very concentrated red fruit flavors. A complex body and very long finish make this wine a pleasure to drink.
The Selecció Especial is pure 100% pure Cariñena coming from hundred year old vines in the village of Porrera, planted on slopes (not terraces) mostly northeast facing in search of freshness. The grapes are chosen one by one and fermented in oak after which it is allowed to 'grow up' for 18 months in new French oak barrels. Cariñena can produce incredibly elegant wines with exuberant aromas of oak, red fruit, leather, Asian spices and wet slate. In the mouth this Especial is full bodied with grainy tannins and a great intensity and power, but extremely balanced. This has concentration and fresh minerality and is very balanced. Advice is to decant the bottle half an hour in advance. Only 4,897 bottles of this vintage were produced. Wijnhuis
The Ferrer Bobet winery is centrally located in the Priorat between Falset and Porrera. In 2002, the winemakers launched this extremely ambitious Priorat project. Both protagonists Sergi Ferrer-Salat and Raül Bobet are no strangers to Catalonia. Ferrer-Salat made a career in the industrial sector. He always dreamed of his own winery. Bobet was chief oenologist with none other than Miguel Torres for many years.
Between 2004 and 2006 they founded their winery in a beautiful location. Thanks to the natural stone and glass, the building is an architectural eye-catcher. The winery follows the latest trends in wine technology, with an underground aging cellar and high-tech installations. The great strength of the winery, however, are the very steep and elevated plots. These are in the middle of the coolest and windiest zone of the Priorat. All these factors make this winery one of the most interesting wine projects in the entire wine-growing region (Guía Gourmets). Syrah, grenache, carineña, cabernet sauvignon and viognier grow on the 22 ha. In addition, the winemakers entered into contracts with ancient vineyards, which supply their valuable grapes. Three wines are vinified here: the beginner wine Ferrer Bobet, the Vinyes Velles of old vines and the renowned Selecció Especial of 100% cariñena. Neil Martin, Robert Parker's intended successor, says of the wine: “Ferrer / Bobet is the future showplace of Priorat. No expense has been spared in the construction of a magnificent winery and in the planting of the vineyards ”. This description summarizes the crux of the matter!
