Description
The 2019 Barolo Cannubi from E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis is an exceptional wine from the prestigious Cannubi vineyard in Barolo, Piedmont. This wine is produced entirely from the Nebbiolo grape, specifically the Michet and Lampia clones, from the estate's own vineyard on the Cannubi hill. The grapes come from a 0.7 hectare plot of 50-year-old vines, located at an altitude of 300 metres with a south/southwest orientation and sandy soils. The vinification and maturation are consistent with the house's other Barolo wines, to emphasise the unique characteristics of the terroir.
The 2019 E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis Barolo Cannubi has a bright ruby red color. On the nose it offers rich aromas of blackcurrant, licorice, subtle notes of red cherries, jasmine and cedar. The palate is warm and powerful, with a pleasant elegance and an important structure with both pronounced and soft tannins. This Barolo goes well with rich meat dishes, game and mature cheeses. It is recommended to decant the wine a few hours before serving to fully develop the aromas.
Antonio Galloni of Vinous Media gave the 2019 Barolo Cannubi 97 points, describing the wine as "absolutely stunning" and "rich and beautifully structured". He praised the precision and barrel aging that works so well here.

I had the chance to walk the Cannubi vineyard with Chiara Boschis this past fall. You really don't get a sense of how steep the inclines are and how powdery the soils are until you are there, struggling with each difficult step. She navigates the difficult terrain effortlessly. The 2019 Barolo Cannubi shows an etched or three-dimensional quality with sharp fruit flavors, blue flower and chalky stone. There were some weather extremes during the growing season, but everything balanced out in the end. Phenolic ripeness was easily achieved. Chiara Boschis describes 2019 as a cross between 2016 and 2017. In her portfolio, Via Nuova is the classic Barolo, Mosconi has the power and Cannubi shows the finesse of Nebbiolo.
"We fight with a bow and arrow, not with a nuclear bomb," says Chiara Boschis of her ongoing efforts to convert all the vintners in the Cannubi cru over to organics. She has almost succeeded in her goal, although a few holdouts remain. Her inspiring Cannubi Bio project is why E. Pira e Figli - Chiara Boschis is a recipient of the Robert Parker Green Emblem award.

The 2019 Barolo Cannubi is flat-out stunning. Rich and beautifully textured, the 2019 dazzles from start to finish. Freshly cut flowers, mint, crushed red berry fruit, orange peel, salt and dried herbs are some of the many notes that grace this exquisite, wonderfully nuanced Barolo from Chiara Boschis. Sweet floral and spice overtones build into the finish. The precision here is unreal. Aging in cask works so well here. What a wine!

Chiara Boschis made some of the most thrilling wines of the vintage. “For me, 2019 opens a new cycle of growing seasons, all marked by intense heat in the summer,” she told me. The 2019s saw two weeks on the skins, followed by malolactic fermentation in steel. “It is important to me to vinify all the lots the same way so that what comes through is the personality of each site. We do a few pumpovers daily and gently turn the rotary tanks.” The wines were racked into oak between December and January and then raised with no racking. Wines from Barolo and Serralunga are aged in casks, while those from Monforte are raised in smaller French oak casks. In recent years, Chiara Boschis has been at the top. Her 2019s are positively stellar.
