Description
The Domaine de la Janasse Vin de Pays Terre de Bussière Principauté d'Orange is a blend of 55% Merlot, 25% Syrah, 10% Grenache and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon. The plot for this Vin de Pays is located in Bussiere. This wine is a pleasant surprise that provides an explosion of power, fruit and concentration and is excellently balanced.
The vines are on a very difficult subsoil of gravel, sand and large boulders. The vines are over 40 years old. In some plots there are vines of over 80 years old. The yields are very low, often less than 30 hl/ha. Due to the difficult subsoil, the grapes can only be picked manually. The Terre de Bussière Principauté d'Orange is made in a classic way and stands out for the combination of power and finesse. This wine undergoes a wood maturation for 12 months. 30% is new oak.
ABOUT JANASSE
Domaine de la Janasse dates back to 1967 when it was founded by Aimé Sabon with 15 ha of vineyard. The total surface area now consists of 55 ha and is currently run by son Christophe and his sister Isabelle. The vineyards are located on a difficult subsoil of gravel, sand and large boulders. The vines are 40 to 80 years old. The yield is usually less than 30 hl/ha due to strict pruning and a rigorous vendange verte. Janasse's big breakthrough came in 2007, when their Châteauneuf du Pape "Veilles Vignes" scored 100 Parker points!! Year after year, all their wines score excellently. The quality of this domaine is so great that even their "regular" Cotes-du-Rhone has a high reputation worldwide! This is really a TOP domain!

Two-thirds of the 2017 IGP Principaute d'Orange Viognier was barrel fermented and aged (only 10% new oak), while the remainder went into concrete. It's medium to full-bodied, with strong varietal notes of flowers and apricots, honeyed richness on the mid-palate and a crisp, mouthwatering finish.
Although I showed up considerably late for my appointment with the brother-sister team of Christophe and Isabelle Sabon, Christophe wore his customary, irrepressible smile. The French soccer team was ahead in their World Cup match, and he was showing off the domaine's stellar 2016s. "It's my father's 50th harvest," he said. "And he thinks it's the best. It's incredible because you have power, finesse and acidity." Interestingly, the Sabons are planting Grenache Gris and Clairette Rose for possible inclusion in red wines, which Christophe said he hopes will add some freshness to Grenache. Worth noting is that the family also owns Clos St Antonin (tasted on this visit but written up under its own heading).

Domaine de la Janasse dates from 1967 when it was founded by Aimé Sabon with 15 ha of vineyard. The total area now exists of 55 ha and is currently run by son Christophe and his sister Isabelle. He is a very successful winemaker! Christophe cultivates more than 15 hectares of vineyards in total. The variety of different grapes is very large, including Grenache, Mourvèdre, Syrah, Marsanne, Roussanne, Carignan, Bourboulenc, Counoise. All wines are made classically and excel through the combination of power and finesse. The vineyards are located on a difficult surface of pebble, sand and large boulders. The vines are 40 to 90 years old. The yield is usually less than 30 hl / ha due to strict pruning and a rigorous vendange verte. Christophe also works almost exclusively organically. Janasse's big break came in 2007, when their Châteauneuf du Pape "Veilles Vignes" scored 100 points Parker !! All their wines score excellent year after year. The quality of this domain is so great that even their "ordinary" Côtes-du-Rhône "is already highly regarded worldwide!
