Full bodied fleshy and sensual it has a luscious core of fruit framed by ripe, polished tannins and juicy, balanced acidity with layers of fine, soft tannins that spread across the palette, showing class and refinement. Rich and dramatic, the 2019 Valandraud bursts with aromas of berry fruit, plums and licorice, framed by a lavish but far from exaggerated application of creamy new oak. Full-bodied, fleshy and sensual, it's broad and enveloping, its lavish core of fruit framed by ripe, polished tannins and succulent balancing acids. Seamless and integrated despite its ripe, hedonistic style, this has turned out beautifully and has the balance to perform well for at least two decades, even if there's no youthful asperity to preclude near-term enjoyment.
Jean-Luc Thunevin once worked for a bank owned by the Mouiex family, and, without knowing all that much about wine, requested some bottles of the 1955 Pétrus, his wife's birth year. As a good employee, his request was gratified, and his passion for wine began; the rest is history. But today, this emblematic vin de garage has become a vin de terroir, defined by holdings on the cool, shallow clay-over-limestone soils of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse; and the garage has become a state-of-the-art winery, with all the precision and temperature control that comes with it. The Valandraud style is undeniably fleshy and dramatic, even hedonistic, yet the brilliant 2019, reviewed here, is also impressively vibrant and charming, refuting any simplistic stereotypes.

Vivid and focused with brightness and clarity of fruit. Dried flowers, too. Full-bodied with layers of fine, soft tannins that spread across the palate and show class and refinement. It goes on for minutes. A beautiful bottle. Try after 2027, but so attractive already.

From: 2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Valandraud is sensational. Stunning in its delineation and with sheer energy, the 2019 dazzles right out of the gate. Dark red/purplish berry fruit, mocha, new leather, licorice and lavender all come alive in the glass. In 2019, Valandraud is a towering, statuesque wine that captures all the best the vintage had to offer. I tasted the 2019 three times and it was magnificent on all three occasions. It is a tremendous effort from Jean-Luc Thunevin and his Murielle Andraud. What a wine!

From: Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Valandraud remains deep in color and yes, the bouquet marches out of the glass with its upfront, precocious aromas of black cherry and boysenberry fruit, plus touches of pressed violet crushed stone. The palate is medium-bodied, complex and harmonious, with fine, very supple tannins, a keen line of acidity and a slightly creamy-textured finish. As I mentioned in my previous note, it belongs within the top tier of Right Bank wines in this vintage.

A regal, statuesque wine, the 2019 Valandraud dazzles from the very first taste. Deep, beautifully textured and expansive, the 2019 races across the palate with stunning energy and pure vibrancy. Dark plum, espresso, chocolate, licorice and menthol are some of the many aromas and flavors that build in the glass. A wine of notable power and explosive richness, Valandraud is truly magical in 2019.

From: Uncertain Smile: Bordeaux 2019 (Jun 2020)
The 2019 Valandraud is deep purple in color. It storms out of the glass with bold black cherries, boysenberry and faint scents of violet, extremely pure and seductive, the new oak seamlessly integrated. The palate is imbued with a sorbet-like freshness on the entry. The multi-layered dark cherry and plummy fruit is underpinned by a killer line of acidity. The finish feels pixelated to the n'th degree. This is a formidable wine from Jean-Luc Thunevin and ranks amongst the very best Right Bank wines of this vintage.

After a 12-year career as a bank clerk, then a grocer and restaurateur in St. Emilion before ending up as a négociant wine merchant, Jean-Luc Thunevin plunged into the adventure of Ch. Valandraud. In 1989, he decided to make his own wine with his partner Murielle and found a terroir on the hill of Fongaban (the name Valandraud is a contraction of 'Vallon' and 'Andraud', the name of his partner). In 1990 he didn't have chais yet, so he bore the fruits to the cooperative.
In 1991, they made the wine in a workshop of their house, which they called the "garage", an old winemaking cellar belonging to the Bécot family. This is how the term 'garage wine' was born, all the more so that the chai was closed off like a garage. Because Thunevin did not have large resources (for example, he did not have an ontrister) the berries were picked by hand, which was already a good selection at the time, after all, bad berries were already excluded. He didn't have pumps either, so he had to manually pour the berries into the cuves. The principle of gravity was forced to become a fact here. After all, he did not have large cuves and was again forced to let malolactic fermentation take place in small barriques, a system that is now also very popular. All these fortuitous factors contributed to a beautiful wine that received rave press, and which, although the terroir was not known, was now classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé in the new classification of 2012.
