Description
The Valandraud Blanc is a rich, structured white with plenty of appeal. Pineapple, ginger, green apple, mint and sweet floral notes all melt together. As always, the Blanc is characterised by a wonderful sense of textural intensity. Certainly, this is one of the more extroverted dry whites in Bordeaux.

A rich, textural wine evocative of confit citrus, yellow orchard fruit and buttery pastry, the 2019 Valandraud Blanc is medium to full-bodied, layered and enveloping, with a sweet core of fruit and lively acids despite its rather fat, gourmand profile.
Jean-Luc Thunevin once worked for a bank owned by the Mouiex family, and, without knowing all that much about wine, requested some bottles of the 1955 Pétrus, his wife's birth year. As a good employee, his request was gratified, and his passion for wine began; the rest is history. But today, this emblematic vin de garage has become a vin de terroir, defined by holdings on the cool, shallow clay-over-limestone soils of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse; and the garage has become a state-of-the-art winery, with all the precision and temperature control that comes with it. The Valandraud style is undeniably fleshy and dramatic, even hedonistic, yet the brilliant 2019, reviewed here, is also impressively vibrant and charming, refuting any simplistic stereotypes.

Sliced apples and honey with mangoes and papaya, yet it remains subtle and refined. It’s full-bodied, tight and refined on the palate. Serious all around.

The 2019 Valandraud Blanc has come together beautifully since I last tasted it and now shows all of its personality. There's wonderful exoticism running through the 2019. Pineapple, ginger, green apple, mint and sweet floral accents all meld together. As always, the Blanc is marked by a gorgeous sense of textural intensity.

The 2019 Valandraud Blanc was showing a bit of new oak on the nose when I tasted it, although there is sufficient fruit to soak that up, and lovely scents of white peach, lemon thyme and pineapple emerge with time. The palate is well balanced, fresh and vibrant, with a fine bead of acidity and touches of lemongrass lending a subtle spiciness toward the finish. Excellent.

The 2019 Valandraud Blanc is a bright, crisp and finely cut wine of energy and tension. Time in the glass brings out the wine's textural depth and creaminess. Green apple, mint, white flowers and sage add freshness and brilliance.

The 2019 Valandraud Blanc has a touch more intensity than the Virginie de Valandraud Blanc as you would expect. There is more fruit here, melon, dried pineapple and just a touch of white peach that emerges with time. The palate is fresh on the entry with a fine bead of acidity. This is where there is a major, tangible difference with the Virginie as there is more depth and complexity here, offering a lovely, caressing, creamy finish with a hint of ginger on the aftertaste. Excellent.

After a 12-year career as a bank clerk, then a grocer and restaurateur in St. Emilion before ending up as a négociant wine merchant, Jean-Luc Thunevin plunged into the adventure of Ch. Valandraud. In 1989, he decided to make his own wine with his partner Murielle and found a terroir on the hill of Fongaban (the name Valandraud is a contraction of 'Vallon' and 'Andraud', the name of his partner). In 1990 he didn't have chais yet, so he bore the fruits to the cooperative.
In 1991, they made the wine in a workshop of their house, which they called the "garage", an old winemaking cellar belonging to the Bécot family. This is how the term 'garage wine' was born, all the more so that the chai was closed off like a garage. Because Thunevin did not have large resources (for example, he did not have an ontrister) the berries were picked by hand, which was already a good selection at the time, after all, bad berries were already excluded. He didn't have pumps either, so he had to manually pour the berries into the cuves. The principle of gravity was forced to become a fact here. After all, he did not have large cuves and was again forced to let malolactic fermentation take place in small barriques, a system that is now also very popular. All these fortuitous factors contributed to a beautiful wine that received rave press, and which, although the terroir was not known, was now classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé in the new classification of 2012.
