Description
The Lynch Bages 2019 is a true classic and consists mainly of Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot with some Cabernet Franc and Petit Verdot with maturation in 75% new oak barriques. In the glass, the Lynch Bages is very deep purple-black in color. The wine needs some time, so decanting in its early years is certainly recommended, but then a legion of aromas is released with pure, ripe blackberries, black cherries and preserved plums that seamlessly merge into roses, cedar wood (cigar box), incense, cardamom and savory accents of black olives and smoked meat. The taste is full with a solid base of very firm, very ripe, grainy tannins and an excellent freshness that supports the generous layers of black fruit with a great aftertaste. From the top year 2019. This is a magnum of 1.5 liters.

A true classic from this estate, the 2019 Lynch-Bages has turned out brilliantly, unwinding in the glass with aromas of cassis and sweet blackberry fruit mingled with licorice, mint, cigar wrapper and loamy soil. Full-bodied, rich and concentrated, it's a deep, multidimensional wine built around a chassis of rich, powdery tannins and succulent balancing acids. The last vintage produced in Lynch-Bages old winery, it will be interesting to compare this benchmark wine with subsequent vintages over the coming years.
Lynch-Bages' recently unveiled new winery is an imposing construction and will certainly permit precision winemaking, with smaller tanks permitting parcel-by-parcel selection. And given that Lynch-Bages comprehends more or less 250 different parcels, recently the subject of an in-depth soil study, that will be a real advantage. The same studies, incidentally, are informing work in the vineyards, with parcels cultivated differently depending on their properties; and organic trials are underway in holdings near dwellings. Yet the old winery has delivered a compelling swan-song vintage in the form of the 2019 Lynch-Bages, a superb wine that merits comparison with the likes of the 2010 and 2000 in quality (and which is closer to the latter than the former in style). It's a terrific effort from the Cazes family and their technical team.

The founder of Lynch-Bages is the Irish John Lynch who settled in Bordeaux in the 17th century. The village of Bages is home to the château. Since 1933, Lynch-Bages has been run by the Cazes family, an institution in the Médoc and a famous name in the world of wine. Third generation André Cazes was mayor of the municipality of Pauillac from 1947 to 1991. His son Jean-Michel has been running the family domain for several decades. His motto is; "great wine in search of the absolute". Given the appreciation for and status of Lynch-Bages, this 'absolute' has been reasonably achieved. Officially the château has the status of 5th Grand Cru Classé, but unofficially it is counted among the greatest of the Médoc. The other parts of the family business can also be described as very successful. Cordeillan-Bages, winery, hotel and best dining in the surrounding area and restaurant / caterer Le Chapon Fin in Bordeaux are good examples of this. Father André founded the Commanderie du Bontemps de Médoc in the late 1940s and Jean-Michel can call himself the founder of the École du Bordeaux. In short, an eventful family in the world of wine.
