Description
The Château Clos Saint Martin Saint-Émilion Grand Cru (Grand Cru Classé) comes from a beautifully situated 1.33 hectare vineyard on the clay-limestone slopes opposite the village cemetery and bordering Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse. The 2019 Clos St. Martin has a beautiful ruby red colour with aromas of cherries, wild berries, violets and subtle spices on the nose. Full, deep and layered, lively and sparkling, with a meaty core of fruit, powdery tannins and bright acidity, finishing with a long, precise finish. It is a Merlot-based blend, supplemented with around 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, picked in four separate harvests and fermented in barrel, simply because such small volumes are difficult to vinify in tank.

From a superbly situated 1.33-hectare vineyard located on the clay-limestone slopes opposite the village cemetery and adjacent to Beauséjour Duffau-Lagarrosse, the 2019 Clos St. Martin has turned out brilliantly, offering up aromas of cherries, wild berries, violets and subtle spices. Full-bodied, deep and layered, it's lively and vibrant, with a fleshy core of fruit, powdery tannins and bright acids, concluding with a long, precise finish. It's a Merlot-based blend, complemented by some 10% Cabernet Franc and 5% Cabernet Sauvignon, picked in four separate harvests and barrel fermented—simply because such small volumes are challenging to vinify in tank.

The 2019 Clos Saint-Martin is absolutely gorgeous. From bottle Clos Saint-Martin is not quite as extroverted as it was from barrel, but that is likely a very good thing for its continued evolution. Today, it shows terrific purity of fruit and fine balance, with bright acids that lend notable persistence. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of inky red/purplish berry fruit. Blood orange, spice and mint accents linger.

From: Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Clos Saint-Martin has held on to the bravura bouquet of upfront, quite bold red berry fruit, brown spices, blueberry, and flinty, almost slate-like scents slipped in underneath, all showing wonderful definition. The palate is medium-bodied with fine structure, and grippy and very peppery toward the finish. This is a slightly more austere and "serious" Clos Saint-Martin compared to the more opulent wines of old. An excellent Saint-Émilion, but one that is going to require more patience than other vintages.

One of the wines of the vintage, the 2019 Clos Saint-Martin is breathtaking. Ample, creamy and vivid in the glass, with the striking interplay of fruit richness and bright acidity that is such a signature of the best wines in this vintage. Time in the glass brings out the wine's resonance and pedigree. All the elements simply fall into place effortlessly. If wine was fashion, Clos Saint-Martin would be haute couture.

From: Uncertain Smile: Bordeaux 2019 (Jun 2020)
The 2019 Clos Saint-Martin needs some time in the glass, quite rich and opulent in style, but well defined with impressive focus. The palate is well balanced with grippy tannins, just a touch of black pepper in the background. Maybe this comes across more muscular on the finish. A Saint-Émilion with aspirations towards long-term cellaring. Very fine, but patience necessary.
