Description
This cru, owned by Mr Stephan Von Neipperg, has been promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé since the new classification of 2012. Rightly so, because the owner has brought the quality very high through strict selections and low yields.
The 2022 Château Canon-La Gaffelière St.-Emilion is a blend of 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon. The Château Canon la Gaffelière is medium to deep garnet purple in colour in the glass. The Canon la Gaffeliere opens with an incredibly evocative nose of lilac, cherry, raspberry, jasmine and Sichuan pepper over a core of ripe black plum, wild blueberry and dark chocolate with a hint of iron ore and cumin seed. The medium to full bodied palate reveals a fantastic intensity of blue and black fruit layers, supported by a rock solid frame of firm, fine grained tannins and bold freshness, finishing long with a firework of fruit, mineral and spicy nuances. An exciting wine from the start and one that needs to age very well and you should definitely decant it in its younger years. This is an asset to the cellar.

A blend of 50% Merlot, 35% Cabernet Franc and 15% Cabernet Sauvignon, the 2022 Canon la Gaffelière exhibits aromas of raspberries and plums, complemented by notions of iris, rose petals, incense and burning embers. Medium to full-bodied, ample and fleshy, it's supple, suave and sophisticated, with a lively core of fruit, powdery tannins and a long, saline finish.

From: 2022 Bordeaux En Primeur: Balance Imbalance (May 2023)
The 2022 Canon La Gaffelière is bright, punchy and full of character. Blood orange, rose petal and spice overtones brighten a core of red/purplish fruit in Saint-Émilion that impresses with its saline intensity, energy and focus. If tasting this blind, I would never say it is a wine from a warm, drought year. It will be interesting to see if the 2022 retains its youthful vibrancy through élevage. This is super promising.

This cru, owned by Mr. Stephan Von Neipperg, has been promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé since the new classification of 2012. from Saint Emilion. The Classification of the Médoc (the left bank) from 1855 has (almost) never changed. In Saint-Émilion (right bank) things are different.
Here the classification is adjusted every few years and Châteaus can be promoted and relegated! In 2012, the last adjustment was made to the classification of Saint-Émilion. With this revaluation Château Canon La Gaffelière was promoted and this is of course completely justified, because the owner has raised the quality very high through strict selections and low returns. The terroir is partly very qualitative (clay-lime), but the flatter part at the foot of the slope with clay-sand is very filtering and warm in terms of composition. Here he has planted cabernet franc which is doing remarkably well, contributing to the strength and aromatic complexity of the wine, alongside the opulent and mouth-filling merlot. The cabernets also contribute to the elegance and natural finesse of Ch. Canon La Gaffeliere. From the 2015 vintage, the wine is certified organic.
