Description
This Grand Cru, owned by Mr Stephan Von Neipperg, has been promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé since the new 2012 classification. Rightly so, because the owner has raised the quality very high through strict selections and low returns.
The Canon la Gaffelière 2019 has a ruby red color and the nose exudes aromas of wild berries, blood orange, exotic herbs, rose petals and violets from the glass. Full, abundant and layered, supple and perfumed, with a deep core of vibrant fruit, melting tannins and a long, salty finish. This vintage contains the highest proportion of Cabernet Franc of all Stephan Von Neipperg's wines, which undoubtedly contributes to its special personality. An exciting wine from the start and one that must mature very well and should certainly be decanted in its younger years. Another asset for the cellar.

The 2019 Canon la Gaffelière has turned out brilliantly, bursting from the glass with a dramatic bouquet of wild berries, blood orange, exotic spices, rose petals, violets and burning embers. Full-bodied, ample and layered, it's supple and perfumed, with a deep core of lively fruit, melting tannins and a long, saline finish. This contains the highest proportion of Cabernet Franc of any of Stephan Von Neipperg's wines, which no doubt helps to account for its singular personality.
Located at the foot of the Saint-Émilion's southern slope, Canon la Gaffelière's 20 hectares of vineyards are planted with some 40% Cabernet Franc and 10% Cabernet Sauvignon, the balance being Merlot. Farming is certified organic, with thoughtful use of cover crops, agroforestry initiatives, unhedged canopies and late pruning. Macerations are long but gentle, and new oak is increasingly chosen for discretion over impact. The result is wines of textural sensuality and striking aromatic range, delivering all the fireworks that Cabernet Franc at full maturity can display. The 2019 has turned out brilliantly and will offer a broad drinking window.

Aromas of dark plums, blueberries, bark, dried leaves, mahogany, licorice and nutmeg. It’s medium-to full-bodied with silky, ripe tannins. Layered and supple with a stylish and polished finish. Voluptuous. One of the best in a long time. Drink from 2026.

From: 2019 Bordeaux from Bottle: The Two Towers (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Canon La Gaffelière is utterly fabulous. All the elements come together in a Saint-Émilion that dazzles with its completeness and total sense of balance. Raspberry jam, blood orange, spice, lavender and dried flowers infuse the 2019 with captivating nuance. La Gaffelière is a rich, potent wine that exudes class and pedigree right out of the gate. In a word: superb.

From: Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Canon La Gaffelière bides its time in the glass, tightly wound at first, then unfurling to reveal vivacious red berries, crushed violet and light iodine aromas that are all exquisitely defined. The palate is medium-bodied with sappy red fruit and perfectly judged acidity, seamless and harmonious. It gently builds with just the right amount of sapidity on the finish. Is this among the best Canon-la-Gaffelière ever made? Most definitely.

From: 2019 Bordeaux: A Long, Strange Trip (Jun, 2020)
The 2019 Canon La Gaffelière is a nervous, tightly wound wine. Then again, we are talking about a Cabernet Franc-driven Saint-Émilion. Sweet red berries, mint, blood orange and spice pulse with tremendous energy. Aromatically expressive and deep, Canon La Gaffelière builds effortlessly over time, leading to a bright, saline and mineral-drenched finish that is a thing of beauty. The 2019 shows much better from a full bottle (as opposed to a half), with silky tannins that emerge with a touch of aeration. I won't be surprised if the 2019 is even better from bottle than this note suggests.

From: Uncertain Smile: Bordeaux 2019 (Jun 2020)
The 2019 Canon La Gaffelière was picked from 19 September to 7 October at 51hl/ha and sees 60% new oak. It has a very focused bouquet, tight at first and benefitting from an hour's aeration. Eventually it reveals glorious red berry scents mixed with cedar, loamy soil and a pinch of cracked black pepper. The palate is medium-bodied with supple tannins, a fine bead of acidity, taut and fresh with a return of that black pepper note right on the finish. Excellent.

This cru, owned by Mr. Stephan Von Neipperg, has been promoted to Premier Grand Cru Classé since the new classification of 2012. from Saint Emilion. The Classification of the Médoc (the left bank) from 1855 has (almost) never changed. In Saint-Émilion (right bank) things are different.
Here the classification is adjusted every few years and Châteaus can be promoted and relegated! In 2012, the last adjustment was made to the classification of Saint-Émilion. With this revaluation Château Canon La Gaffelière was promoted and this is of course completely justified, because the owner has raised the quality very high through strict selections and low returns. The terroir is partly very qualitative (clay-lime), but the flatter part at the foot of the slope with clay-sand is very filtering and warm in terms of composition. Here he has planted cabernet franc which is doing remarkably well, contributing to the strength and aromatic complexity of the wine, alongside the opulent and mouth-filling merlot. The cabernets also contribute to the elegance and natural finesse of Ch. Canon La Gaffeliere. From the 2015 vintage, the wine is certified organic.
