Description
The estate's Second Wine offers a different interpretation of the Calon terroir. With an average of 75% Merlot in the blends, Le Marquis de Calon Ségur completely distinguishes itself from the First Wine. “It benefits from a real personal expression,” underlines Vincent Millet. “The plots were separated from the start.” Le Marquis de Calon Ségur provides immediate pleasure, warmth and a velvety texture. It is generally carefully aged for 17 months in oak barrels, a third of which are new. Wonderfully easy to drink, silky smooth and expressive, the charm comes to the fore, while at the same time bringing the elegance of the Grand Vin to our minds.
The soil consists of a thick layer of gravel, deposited during the Quaternary period. Mainly clay subsoil from the Tertiary. On top of the gravel deposits there is also a fine layer of clay of lacustrine origin. The area consists of 55 ha (136 acres), of which 45 ha is planted. The average age of the vines is 20 years. A first selection of grapes on the vine. Mechanical sorting of the grapes by means of vibration, followed by manual sorting. Temperature-controlled tronconical stainless steel tanks.
The 2019 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is a fantastic second wine. Full, bold and dramatic, the 2019 makes a huge impression. Black cherry, plum, new leather, graphite and incense build as this flamboyant, opulent Saint-Estèphe shows its considerable appeal. The 2019 is a great wine.

Deep purple-black colored, the 2019 Le Marquis de Calon-Ségur wafts out of the glass with fragrant potpourri, garrigue and Darjeeling tea scents over a core of redcurrant jelly, plum preserves and blackcurrant pastilles plus a touch of cracked black pepper. The full-bodied palate has a rock-solid frame of grainy tannins with loads of freshness supporting the crunchy black fruits, finishing long and savory.

A solid red with a deep, dense center palate and a balance of berry, spice and chocolate character. It’s full and linear at the finish. Better than the 2018.

The 2019 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is a terrific second wine. Ample, bold and dramatic, the 2019 packs a huge punch. Black cherry, plum, new leather, graphite and incense build as this flamboyant, opulent Saint-Estèphe shows off its considerable allure. The 2019 is a big wine, but the 15.1% alcohol is not especially evident.

From: Omne Trium Perfectum: Bordeaux 2019s in Bottle (Feb 2022)
The 2019 Le Marquis de Calon, matured in 25% new oak, sports an almost identical bouquet to the one I found out of barrel, featuring intense blackberry, iodine and pressed iris petals, albeit with more composure. The palate is medium-bodied with a smooth, slightly lactic entry and fine acidity, maybe not quite as "crunchy" as I recall, yet still satisfyingly persistent.

From: 2019 Bordeaux: A Long, Strange Trip (Jun, 2020)
The 2019 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur is a stunning wine. Dark cherry, blackberry jam, plum, gravel, menthol, licorice, inky spice and new leather meld together in a Saint-Estèphe that is rich, unctuous and potent to the core. In the glass, the 2019 is virile and expansive, with tremendous depth, persistence and aromatic breadth. Not a timid wine, the 2019 packs plenty of punch and 15.1% alcohol that is remarkably well-integrated.

From: Uncertain Smile: Bordeaux 2019 (Jun 2020)
The 2019 Le Marquis de Calon Ségur comes sprinting out of the blocks on the nose with powerful blackberry, iodine and pressed iris petals, a little "in ya face" at first but with aeration develops commendable cohesion. The palate is medium-bodied with crunchy black fruit laced with pencil lead, very harmonious with a precise and persistent finish. This is surely the best second label from Calon Ségur to date.
