Description
Pujanza belongs to the modern style of Rioja and also has the great advantage that the vineyards are located at a high altitude (the Pujanza Norte comes from one of the highest vineyards in the Rioja). This gives the wine the typical Rioja character, but with a lot of elegance and freshness.
The white Pujanza wines are among the top among the white Riojas. The white wine from Pujanza is called Añadas Frías. This great wine is only made in top years and is only made in a cool year, which gives the wine Burgundian characteristics. The wine comes from grapes from a vineyard of only 1.5 hectares in San Juan de Anterportalatina - Laguardia, DOCa. Rioja. This unique vineyard is located at an altitude of 600 meters on a limestone soil. In a cool year they release the Anada Frias and in a warmer year the white wine is the Anterportalatina
The Añadas Frías is 100% made from the Viura grape. The wine has matured in 225 liter new oak barrels on its own lees (sur lie) in a temperature-controlled environment. The wine therefore ripens very slowly, develops great storage potential and adds extra complexity. All this leads to a Burgundian type of wine of the very best kind. We are certainly not going to say that this is an affordable wine, but it can easily compete with the white Burgundian or Rhône wines that cost many times that amount. The wine is very refined with a complexity of scents in which the citrus and minerality initially emerge, but little by little it reveals its secrets and we smell white flowers and even a little peach. The freshness is striking in the mouth and here too the minerality comes to the fore and the wood is very beautifully interwoven. The aftertaste is great and long lasting. This is absolute top and a pity that less than 1000 bottles have been made and on average it is only made once every 3-4 years.
The wine has been chosen by Decanter as the best white wine in Spain (98/100). They start their assessment with: "... A Jewel, Unique...." In the tab: Attachment you will find the fact sheet of the wine and the assessment of Decanter
FACT: In the 'Attachments' tab you will find the official fact sheet of this beautiful wine. We will send this to you automatically when you order this wine. The white 2021 Añadas Frías (“cold vintages”), produced only in cooler years when the wine has the profile he's looking for, was produced with grapes from a 1.5-hectare vineyard in Laguardia at 600 meters altitude. It has 13.3% alcohol and a very low pH (3.08), which denotes very good freshness and notable acidity (seven grams of tartaric acid per liter of wine). It started fermenting in stainless steel and finished in 500-liter French oak barrels and 800-liter concrete egg. It has a phenomenal nose—nuanced, complex, not too expressive perhaps, a little shy and insinuating, with hints of flowers, pollen and crushed rocks. The palate is vibrant, precise, delineated and fresh with pungent flavors. Possibly the finest vintage to date. 2,045 bottles were filled in 2023.
Pujanza is a producer of clean and modern wines from Laguardia and is owned by Carlos San Pedro. Some labels have been redesigned and have a more classical feeling to them … And the wines perhaps do too. The 2021s are superb. He produces an average of 200,000 bottles.

From: The Many Riojas of Rioja: A Tale of Forking Paths (Apr 2024)
The 2021 Añadas Frías is 100% Viura, hailing from the SJ Anteportalatina Vineyard in Laguardia, Rioja Alavesa. As the name suggests, Pujanza crafts this wine exclusively in cold vintages. Aged for 12 months in oak barrels and concrete eggs, this bright garnet wine showcases balsamic and herbal aromas: mint, pennyroyal, thyme and bay leaf. Dry, lean and light, the vibrant palate is both nimble and compact, resembling the precision of a violin string. It represents a rare and innovative concept in the world of wine.

Carlos San Pedro created Bodega Pujanza in 1998. He planned to make terroir-focused wines mostly using grapes from vineyards in Laguardia, Rioja Alavesa, and that is exactly what he’s done, making ever more precise adjustments in search of greater purity. Every wine he bottles comes from a specific vineyard. As he told me, “In this area, elegance is far more desirable than potency.” Such is his pursuit. Wines like Valdepoleo and Pujanza Cisma speak eloquently of his success so far.

Bodegas Pujanza is located in the heart of the Rioja Alavesa. The winery is located in one of the most beautiful villas in this region. A real prime location in the most beautiful part of the Rioja. Bodegas Pujanza is one of the youngest (top) Rioja houses and started in June 2002. It is a family business with a long tradition of growing grapes and wine making in the capital of the Rioja Alavesa. The location in the valley of the Ebro and the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria, partly determines the character of the Pujanza wines.
Owner Carlos San Pedro and his team are constantly working to improve the performance of their vineyards and with an almost manic approach, they try to improve the quality of the wines even further. Pujanza is one of the new style winemakers in the Rioja such as Remirez de Ganuza and Tentenublo where the focus is on absolute top quality with emphasis on the fruit. The fact that Penin and Parker without exception rate the wines of this house well above 90 points (so the absolute honor division) says enough. The 4 main wines are the Hado, the Valdepoleo (in the past this wine was called the Pujanza Pujanza) the Norte and the cult wine the Cisma.
Carlos is one of the pioneers together with Remirez de Ganuza in the field of modern style Rioja's and has the luxury that his vineyards are situated high so that there are good differences between day and night temperature. This gives the wines extra complexity and freshness. Carlos only works with single vineyards except at the Hado (here the grapes are used from the norte and Valdepoleo vineyards). Carlos has divided all 3 vineyards into plots (except the Cisma vineyard because it is so small) and all these plots are vinified separately. Only just before bottling, the various plots are combined until it has the desired taste and then it is bottled. This concept is far from economical but does make for great wines. Carlos does not use external yeasts, and he deliberately chooses to keep the amount of new wood low, but also to raise the wines longer in large (used) barriques.
