The Knipser brothers presented their first red wines of international standard in the early eighties. Since then, they have been fully committed to perfecting the vineyard methods and thus the quality of the wine. Their focus is Große Gewächse Riesling and Pinot Noir. Weingut Knipser is located in Laumersheim in Germany's second largest wine region, Pfalz. Knipser has been voted Germany's best winemaker several times.

Knipser is known for his many excellent wines from different types of grape varieties such as; Spätburgunder, St. Lauren, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Grauburgunder, Weissburgunder, Gewürztraminer and even the Bordeaux grape varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon!! A wide range of grape varieties, with which he can produce different types of wines from styles such as Burgundy to Bordeaux from one region of origin. 95% of the wines are dry, mainly from traditional grape varieties, these are accompanied by wines from non-indigenous varieties, but then with a Pfalz interpretation.

As with all of Knipsers premium wines, the red wines are only available after several years of maturation. The Kirschgarten Spätburgunder is the top model and comes from the oldest Spätburgunder vines (Grosses Gewächs). It comes from a small vineyard consisting of several plots on the southern edge of Laumersheim. Very calcareous locations such as the 'Mergelweg' (since 2007) and the 'Riescht-plot' next to the houses are also used. The oldest Spätburgunder vines are on this last plot. This very sheltered location in the wind and rain shadow of Orlenberg was already appreciated in the Middle Ages by the Kirschgarthen nunnery in Worms. The subsoil consists mainly of loess soil (fine clay) with excellent water retention capacity and limestone.

This 100% Spätburgunder or Pinot Noir can be called classic in all its elements. In the nose slightly animal with fine fruit aromas such as cherry, red currant and a bit of blackberry but also some leather, a bit of oak and espresso. In the mouth soft, ripe tannins that can still age beautifully. The acidity in combination with the beautiful red fruit makes this wine very elegant. The 2017 version has had more than 5 years of maturation (first barrel and then bottle maturation) before it became available.

The Kirschgarthen receives top scores every year and is therefore among the best Pinot Noir Grosse Gewächsen in Germany. A delicious wine to enjoy but of course excellent with a nice roast, grilled beef, pork and poultry.

The Knipser winery is a family-owned business that has been producing wines since 1876. The current generation of winemakers, brothers Volker and Werner Knipser, continue the tradition and have further enhanced the winery's reputation. Knipser is located in the Pfalz region, one of Germany's major wine regions. The Pfalz is known for its mild climate and fertile soils, making it ideal for cultivating various grape varieties.

Weingut Knipser Wine Selection

Knipser's wine selection encompasses a wide range of grape varieties, including Riesling, Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder), Chardonnay, and various other white and red varieties. They are renowned for their expertise in both white and red wines. They also offer some rare cuvées highly appreciated by wine enthusiasts. At Grandcruwijnen, we offer several wines from Weingut Knipser. Entry-level wines like the Laumersheim Blauer Spätburgunder Trocken and the Laumersheim Kalkmergel Riesling Trocken are available. The Pinot Noir (Spätburgunder) and Riesling grapes come from various vineyards around Laumerheim. We also feature premium wines such as the Kirschgarten Spätburgunder Grosses Gewächs and the Laumersheim Steinbuckel Riesling Grosses Gewächs. The Steinbuckel Riesling Grosses Gewächs from Knipser is the Grand Cru among Rieslings. The Riesling grapes come from a small vineyard located in the Pfalz on a substrate of marl and limestone.
