The Knipser brothers presented their first red wines of international standard in the early 1980s. Since then they have been fully committed to perfecting the vineyard methods and therefore the quality of the wine. Their focus is Große Gewächse Riesling and Pinot Noir. Weingut Knipser located in Laumersheim in Germany's second largest wine region, Pfalz. Knipser has been voted best winemaker in Germany several times.
Knipser is known for its many excellent wines from different types of grape varieties such as; Spätburgunder, St. Lauren, Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc, Riesling, Grauburgunder, Weissburgunder, Gewürztraminer and even the Bordeaux grape varieties Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon!! A wide range of grape varieties, with which he can produce different types of wines from styles such as Burgundy to Bordeaux from one region of origin. 95% of the wines are dry, mainly from traditional grape varieties, these are accompanied by wines from non-native varieties, but with a Palatinate interpretation.
As with all van Knipsers premium wines, the red wines only become available after several years of aging. The Kirschgarten Spätburgunder is the top model and comes from the oldest Spätburgunder vines (Grosses Gewächs). It comes from a small vineyard consisting of several plots on the southern outskirts of Laumersheim. Very calcareous locations such as the 'Mergelweg' (since 2007) and the 'Riescht plot' next to the houses are also used. The oldest Spätburgunder vines on this last plot. This very sheltered location in the wind and rain shadow of Orlenberg was valued as far back as the Middle Ages by the Kirschgarthen nunnery in Worms. The subsoil consists mainly of loess soil (fine loam) with excellent water retention capacity and limestone.
This 100% Spätburgunder or Pinot Noir can be called classic in all its element. Lightly animated in the nose with fine fruit aromas such as cherry, red currant and a little blackberry, but also some leather, a little oak and espresso. In the mouth soft, ripe tannins that can still age beautifully. The acidity in combination with the beautiful red fruit makes this wine very elegant. The 2017 version has matured for more than 5 years (first barrel and then bottle aging) before it became available.
The Kirschgarthen receives top marks every year and are therefore among the best Pinot Noir Grosse Gewächsen in Germany. A delicious wine to enjoy, but of course excellent with a nice roast, grilled beef, pork and poultry.
