Description
Screaming Eagle and the development of The Flight
Screaming Eagle is considered one of Napa Valley's most exclusive and sought-after producers. The estate operates with an extremely strict selection process, small volumes, and a philosophy focused on elegance and the pure expression of their unique Oakville terroir. While Screaming Eagle itself is primarily Cabernet Sauvignon-driven, The Flight is a separate cuvée in which Merlot plays the leading role, complemented by Cabernet Sauvignon. Under the Winery tab, you'll find extensive background information about the estate and the history of these rare wines.
The Flight's style revolves around refinement, aromatic clarity, and a silkier structure than the powerful Screaming Eagle Cabernet Sauvignon. The result is a wine that combines finesse with depth and remarkable longevity.
Oakville's terroir and unique vineyards
The estate is located in Oakville, one of Napa Valley's most prestigious subregions. The vineyards are characterized by warm days, cool nights, and constant ventilation from the bay, allowing the grapes to ripen slowly and evenly. The soils consist of well-draining gravel, sand, and alluvial deposits, ideal for grapes with concentration and elegant structure.
The Flight uses a specific Merlot vineyard planted in the 1980s on the east side of the estate. These vines are situated on exceptionally gravelly, dry soils and produce grapes with vibrant acidity, aromatic freshness, and a striking floral signature. Only a limited portion of the Cabernet Sauvignon meets the profile required by The Flight: fruit with refined tannins, clarity, and a light-footed structure.
The grapes and character of the 2018 vintage
The Flight is typically Merlot-driven, supplemented with Cabernet Sauvignon and sometimes a small fraction of Cabernet Franc. The 2018 vintage showcases the estate's commitment to energy and elegance: a wine with a powerful aromatic presence, yet a silky, harmonious structure that enhances the estate's Merlot style.
2018 was a year full of life for Screaming Eagle's vineyards, as winemaker Nick Gislason described it. The canopies were healthy and exuberant, the balance between sun and coolness was ideal, and the grapes achieved a rare aromatic precision. This combination produced a wine that combines freshness, tension, and intensity in a remarkably elegant structure.
Vinification and maturation of the 2018 The Flight
The grapes are harvested by hand and rigorously selected. Only plots that deliver the purity, freshness, and refined tannin structure essential to The Flight are used. Vinification is carried out plot by plot, often in small tanks. Fermentation is carried out with great care, maintaining temperature and extraction, emphasizing finesse and aromatic clarity.
After fermentation, the wine is aged in French oak barriques, some new and some used, to maintain the balance between structure and elegance. The total aging time varies by vintage. The 2018 displays a perfect integration of oak and fruit, emphasizing the wine's freshness and refined character.
Color, scent and taste of the 2018 Screaming Eagle The Flight
The color is medium to deep garnet red with purple highlights. The aroma opens with a beautiful perfume of red roses, cherry liqueur, black raspberries, and fresh cassis. Then, layers of ironstone, damp earth, lavender, star anise, and a hint of cinnamon powder emerge.
On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied with a striking freshness that enhances the black fruit and floral notes. The tannins are ripe, fine, and slightly grainy, providing wonderful precision and grip. The finish is long, mineral, and lively, with the pure focus characteristic of this cuvée.
The wine received 98 points and has a drinking window from 2024 to 2054. It is a vintage distinguished by aromatic layering, structure and an almost weightless elegance.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 The Flight drifts sensuously out of the glass with the most gorgeous perfume of red roses, kirsch, black raspberries and fresh blackcurrants followed by hints of iron ore, tilled soil, lavender and star anise plus a touch of powdered cinnamon. Medium to full-bodied, the palate has a fantastically chiseled structure of ripe, grainy tannins and bold freshness supporting the black fruit and floral layers, finishing with bags of minerals.
“I loved it!” winemaker Nick Gislason told me when I asked him for his thoughts on the 2018 vintage. “Everything is just really perfumey with a lot of verve and a lot of freshness. It’s a wholesome vintage, if that makes sense? The canopies were big and healthy; there was a lot of life in the vineyard. After 2017, it felt like the bloom that comes afterward.”
He went on to say, "We made a little 2017 red. Only four barrels of the Cab! Ten barrels of The Flight. Only from grapes that came in before the fires—mainly Merlot and a couple of blocks of Cabernet."
Whereas Screaming Eagle is mainly sourced from Cabernet Sauvignon grown on the western side of the estate, there is one plot of old Merlot (1980s plantings) on the eastern side of the vineyard that continually makes the backbone of this Second Flight/The Flight. This is planted on very gravelly, well-drained soils. Gislason explained, “The Cabernet Sauvignon for The Flight is always about being fresh, light and perfumey, without the firmer tannins that Cabernet can sometimes give. There is a ‘fresh’ end of the property that this tends to come from. There is some other Merlot on the other side of the property that doesn’t have the acidity, perfume or brightness we’re looking for. We don’t use this in The Flight.”

Screaming Eagle is an American winery located in Oakville, north of the city of Napa in the Napa Valley (California). It is especially famous for its very rare, limited production Cabernet Sauvignon wines.
History of Screaming Eagle
This winery was founded in 1986 by Jean Phillips, who sold grapes to several Napa Valley wineries. She purchased the 57-acre Oakville vineyard in 1986, which was planted with a mix of varieties, most of which were sold to various Napa wineries, except for 80 vines of Cabernet Sauvignon. For this one acre of Cabernet, Philips solicited the opinions of Robert Mondavi Winery employees on the commercial potential of its wine before hiring Richard Peterson as a consultant, and then met with Peterson's daughter, Heidi Peterson Barrett, who became Screaming Eagle's first winemaker. The entire vineyard was replanted in 1995 with three grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 1992 vintage, released in 1995, through a combination of very low production numbers and very positive reviews, made Screaming Eagle one of the most celebrated and expensive wines in the Napa. In 1992, she released the first vintage Screaming Eagle wine. On March 17, 2006, the estate was sold to Stan Kroenke and Charles Banks. The new owners had exciting plans to keep the vineyard small, but raise the bar in terms of quality. In April 2009, Charles Banks left Screaming Eagle, leaving Stan Kroenke as the sole owner.
Production of Screaming Eagle
Screaming Eagle's production is rare, with a strong focus on quality. The vineyard is relatively small and the team takes a practical and precise approach to every aspect of winemaking. The vineyards extend over 48.21 acres (19.51 ha), planted with the varieties Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Sauvignon blanc. The vineyards are managed by David Abreu Vineyard Management and cared for by Jorge Delgado and his team. In 2006, 34 hectares were replanted. Annual production ranges from 400 to 750 cases (between 5,000 and 9,000 bottles of 750 ml). The winemakers are Nick Gislason, Robert Black and Michel Rolland. Screaming Eagle is known for its extremely limited production, typically producing only a few hundred cases of wine per year. This limited availability has contributed to its reputation as one of the most exclusive and sought-after wineries in the world. This producer's Cabernet Sauvignon are highly praised for their exceptional quality, complexity and depth. Their reviews from wine critics are almost always excellent and the wines are considered among the finest wines produced in Napa Valley. The rarity and quality of Screaming Eagle wines make them among the most expensive in the world. They are often sold through allocation to a select group of customers, and prices on the secondary market can be exorbitantly high.
