Screaming Eagle is an American winery located in Oakville, north of Napa in Napa Valley, California. It is particularly famous for its extremely rare, limited-production Cabernet Sauvignon wines. This winery was founded in 1986 by Jean Phillips, who sold grapes to several Napa Valley wineries. She purchased the 57-hectare Oakville vineyard in 1986, which was planted with a mix of varietals, most of which, except for 80 Cabernet Sauvignon vines, were sold to various Napa wineries.
Screaming Eagle's production is rare, with a strong focus on quality. The vineyard is relatively small, and the team applies a practical and precise approach to every aspect of winemaking. The vineyards span 48.21 acres (19.51 ha), planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, and a small amount of Sauvignon Blanc. The vineyards are managed by David Abreu Vineyard Management and cared for by Jorge Delgado and his team. In 2006, 34 hectares were replanted. Annual production ranges from 400 to 750 cases (between 5,000 and 9,000 750ml bottles). The winemakers are Nick Gislason, Robert Black, and Michel Rolland. Screaming Eagle is known for its extremely limited production, typically producing only a few hundred cases of wine annually. This limited availability has contributed to its reputation as one of the most exclusive and sought-after wineries in the world. The Screaming Eagle is a medium to deep garnet purple in color and floats from the glass with vibrant notes of ripe blackberries, black cherries, and fresh red and black currants, plus hints of licorice, candied violets, cedarwood chestnut, and clove oil with a seductive touch of sea spray. Medium-bodied with breathtaking elegance, the palate is finely structured yet built like a brick house with a super-tight backbone and exquisitely knitted acidity. The intense flavors of black and red fruit are accentuated by layers of mineral and floral notes, finishing with incredible length and depth. Undeniably stunning.

Lots of crushed berries, such as raspberries and blackberries, with spearmint and crushed stone, as well as redcurrants. Full-bodied with regal tannins that build on the palate as you taste it and flow over like a gentle waterfall. Such a beautiful, subtle and graceful texture. Best after 2027.

The 2019 Screaming Eagle is a wine of mind-blowing elegance and finesse that stand apart from the generally more potent style of so many wines in this vintage. Deep, sensual and beautifully layered, the 2019 is simply magnificent from the very first taste. A whole range of red/purplish fruit, spice, leather, dried herb and blood orange accents give the 2019 its vivid, wonderfully detailed personality. Because of its price, both on release and in the secondary market, Screaming Eagle is the most talked about wine in Napa Valley. It is hype or not? All I can say is that I was very fortunate to drink a number of older vintages during lockdown and all those wines lived up to their reputations.

Winemaker Nick Gislason describes 2019 as a year with a small crop and small berries. That intensity and richness very much comes through in the wines, both of which are superb. There is a sense of vividness, of detail, in the 2019s that elevates them into the stratosphere. The Screaming Eagle Cabernet is often one of the most elegant, refined wines in Napa Valley. It is all that and more in 2019.

This winery was founded in 1986 by Jean Phillips, who sold grapes to several Napa Valley wineries. She purchased the 57-acre Oakville vineyard in 1986, which was planted with a mix of varieties, most of which were sold to various Napa wineries, except for 80 vines of Cabernet Sauvignon. For this one acre of Cabernet, Philips solicited the opinions of Robert Mondavi Winery employees on the commercial potential of its wine before hiring Richard Peterson as a consultant, and then met with Peterson's daughter, Heidi Peterson Barrett, who became Screaming Eagle's first winemaker. The entire vineyard was replanted in 1995 with three grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 1992 vintage, released in 1995, through a combination of very low production numbers and very positive reviews, made Screaming Eagle one of the most celebrated and expensive wines in the Napa. In 1992, she released the first vintage Screaming Eagle wine. On March 17, 2006, the estate was sold to Stan Kroenke and Charles Banks. The new owners had exciting plans to keep the vineyard small, but raise the bar in terms of quality. In April 2009, Charles Banks left Screaming Eagle, leaving Stan Kroenke as the sole owner.
