Description
Screaming Eagle is an American winery located in Oakville, north of the city of Napa in the Napa Valley (California). It is best known for its very rare, limited production Cabernet Sauvignon wines. This winery was founded in 1986 by Jean Phillips, who sold grapes to several Napa Valley wineries. She purchased the 57-acre Oakville vineyard in 1986, which was planted with a mix of varieties, most of which were sold to various Napa wineries, except for 80 vines of Cabernet Sauvignon.
Screaming Eagle’s production is rare, with a strong focus on quality. The vineyard is relatively small and the team takes a hands-on and precise approach to every aspect of winemaking. The vineyards cover 48.21 acres (19.51 ha), planted with Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc and a small amount of Sauvignon Blanc. The vineyards are managed by David Abreu Vineyard Management and cared for by Jorge Delgado and his team. In 2006, 34 hectares were replanted. Annual production ranges from 400 to 750 cases (between 5,000 and 9,000 750ml bottles). The winemakers are Nick Gislason, Robert Black and Michel Rolland. Screaming Eagle is known for its extremely limited production, typically producing only a few hundred cases of wine each year. This limited availability has contributed to its reputation as one of the most exclusive and sought-after wineries in the world. This producer's Cabernet Sauvignon is highly praised for its exceptional quality, complexity and depth. Its reviews from wine critics are almost always excellent and its wines are considered some of the best produced in Napa Valley. The rarity and quality of Screaming Eagle wines make them some of the most expensive in the world. They are often sold by allotment to a select group of customers, and secondary market prices can be exorbitant.
The 2014 Screaming Eagle is a blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and the remainder Cabernet Franc. The hallmark of this iconic wine is the exceptional purity of the cassis fruit, which is also abundantly present in the 2014. This is a seductive, direct wine with an opaque ruby/purple colour, seamlessly constructed, full-bodied and with a long finish of silky tannins. It glides across the palate with that characteristic fruit purity that is so typical of Screaming Eagle.

The 2014 Screaming Eagle is an 880-case blend of 79% Cabernet Sauvignon, 16% Merlot and the rest Cabernet Franc. The telltale sign of this iconic wine is its extraordinary purity of crème de cassis fruit, which is displayed abundantly in the 2014. It doesn’t quite have the structure and mass of the 2013, but this sexy, up-front, opaque ruby/purple-colored wine is seamlessly constructed, full-bodied, and has a long finish with silky tannins. This seems to float across that palate with that great fruit purity that is a characteristic of Screaming Eagle. Drink it over the next 25+ years.

Extremely perfumed with blackberries, currants and flower. Rose petals, too. Seductive. Medium to full body. It grows on the palate with an extremely long finish that goes on for minutes. The tannins are ultra-fine and polished. Purity and essence to this. Feminine yet wild and unpredictable. Available in March. Better in 2021.

From: Napa Valley Trilogy: 2014, 2015 & 2016 (Dec 2016)
The 2014 Screaming Eagle looks like it is going to need a good few years at a minimum to really show its true colors. Although Screaming Eagle can be quite seductive in its youth, there is little of that in 2014. Virile and imposing, the 2014 possesses tremendous depth and equally formidable tannins. Graphite, gravel, smoke and herb notes give the 2014 its persistent, mineral/savory-infused profile. Screaming Eagle is less affected by its recent bottling than Second Flight. Still, I would not plan on opening a bottle anytime soon.
- By Antonio Galloni on October 2016
Screaming Eagle's 2014s are intense, imposing wines. Both Second Flight and Screaming Eagle were bottled towards the end of August 2016 and appear to presently be going through a closed phase, something I saw with many wines this year. I have tasted the 2014s several times in the past, and am not at all concerned, but readers who taste the wines at this stage might be taken aback at how aback at how reticent they are. To be sure, both 2014s are quite dark, but they were also more finessed before bottling. In addition to the bottled 2014s, I also saw a number of 2015s from barrel. Those wines, tasted from single blocks prior to any blending, show just how diverse and multifaceted this Oakville vineyard is.

She purchased the 57-acre Oakville vineyard in 1986, which was planted with a mix of varieties, most of which were sold to various Napa wineries, except for 80 vines of Cabernet Sauvignon. For this one acre of Cabernet, Philips solicited the opinions of Robert Mondavi Winery employees on the commercial potential of its wine before hiring Richard Peterson as a consultant, and then met with Peterson's daughter, Heidi Peterson Barrett, who became Screaming Eagle's first winemaker. The entire vineyard was replanted in 1995 with three grape varieties: Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. The 1992 vintage, released in 1995, through a combination of very low production numbers and very positive reviews, made Screaming Eagle one of the most celebrated and expensive wines in the Napa. In 1992, she released the first vintage Screaming Eagle wine. On March 17, 2006, the estate was sold to Stan Kroenke and Charles Banks. The new owners had exciting plans to keep the vineyard small, but raise the bar in terms of quality. In April 2009, Charles Banks left Screaming Eagle, leaving Stan Kroenke as the sole owner.
