Remírez de Ganuza Winery
Remírez de Ganuza belongs to the absolute elite of Rioja and is known for its innovative and precise working methods. The estate is located in Samaniego, at the foot of the Sierra Cantabria, and works with a strong focus on selection and quality. One of the characteristic techniques is separating the shoulders and tips of the grape clusters, whereby only the best part is used for the top wines. This results in wines with concentration, finesse, and a distinct terroir character. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
Region, climate and location
The vineyards are located in Rioja Alavesa, in the foothills of the Sierra Cantabria. This location offers protection against extreme weather conditions and ensures a favorable microclimate. The combination of altitude, soil, and climate produces wines with structure, freshness, and aromatic complexity. The old vineyards with low yields contribute to the concentration and depth of the wine.
Vineyards and grape varieties
The grapes come from vineyards with an average age of approximately 60 years, located on selected plots in the region. The blend consists of 82% Tempranillo, supplemented by 10% Viura, 6% Graciano, and 2% Garnacha. This composition ensures structure, freshness, and aromatic complexity, with Tempranillo forming the base and the other grapes contributing finesse and balance.
Harvest, vinification and aging
The grapes are harvested manually and transported in small crates to preserve quality. Before fermentation, the grapes are cooled and carefully selected on sorting tables. An important detail is that only the shoulders of the Tempranillo bunches are used, ensuring extra concentration and quality. Fermentation takes place in both stainless steel tanks and concrete vats. Malolactic fermentation occurs in oak barrels. Subsequently, the wine ages for 25 months in 225-liter French oak barrels, which provides structure and complexity.
Color, smell and taste
The wine has a deep ruby red color with a slight development towards garnet. On the nose, complex aromas of ripe red and black fruit emerge, complemented by notes of spices, tobacco, cedarwood, and a subtle balsamic touch.
On the palate, the wine is powerful yet refined, with ripe tannins and a good balance between fruit and wood. The structure is firm and layered, with fresh acidity that provides tension. The finish is long and elegant, with notes of spices, dried fruit, and a light spiciness that lingers.
Development and drinking window
The wine is already ready to drink but also has excellent aging potential. The expected drinking window is between 2024 and 2035, during which the wine will further develop in complexity and softness. A famous quote is by Robert Parker: "The Remírez de Ganuza Reserva 1996 could be called the Château Latour of Rioja (...) This looks to be a prodigious Rioja that should age effortlessly for three decades."

1. Grilled ribeye with roasted garlic and thyme potatoes
The proteins and fat of the meat soften the tannins, while the spicy accents in the dish complement the oak aging and the spiciness of the wine beautifully.
2. Beef stew with chorizo and pimentón
The deep, smoky flavors and slightly spicy touch of chorizo reflect the mature character of the wine. The stew provides concentration and warmth, matching the intensity of the wine.
3. Baked aubergine with tomato, olive oil and Manchego
The savory flavors of roasted vegetables and cheese enhance the Mediterranean notes in the wine, while the umami brings out the fruity profile.
4. Mushroom risotto with porcini mushrooms and aged balsamic vinegar
The earthy mushrooms and concentrated balsamic flavors complement the mature character of the wine. The creaminess of the risotto contrasts beautifully with the texture.
5. Date filled with duck liver and wrapped in Serrano ham
Salt, sweetness, and fat combine to create a layered taste experience that reflects the complexity of the wine. The rich mouthfeel pairs well with the length and intensity of the Reserva.
6. Lamb neck slow-cooked with rosemary and black olives
The spiciness and fatty character of this dish bring the spicy, savory profile of the wine to life. The olives enhance the umami and salinity, which harmonize perfectly with the aging notes.

Reserva 2017
95 Points Tim Atkin: Only good winemakers got the best out of the hot as well as frost-affected 2017 vintage and Jesús Mendoza is certainly one of those. Pairing Tempranillo and 10% Graciano, it's an old- vine cuvée with well-managed tannins, stylish 58% new wood, appealing freshness for the year and flavours of fig, bramble and red berries and fine-grained tannins. 2026-34

Grandcruwijnen is the Dutch Importer of the wines of the Top Rioja House: Remirez de Ganuza and we are very proud of this because Remirez de Ganuza belongs to the absolute top of Spain and is also highly appreciated internationally. All their wines score well above the 90 Parker and Penin point mark with the absolute peak for the 2004 Gran Reserva which has received a whopping 100 points.
The owner of this absolute top domain is Fernando Remirez de Ganuza. Obsessed with quality with an ongoing commitment to excellence in his wine, Fernando is the absolute pioneer in Innovation. At Remirez de Ganuza, even the smallest detail in the entire production chain of the wines is looked at and they are constantly optimizing. Fernado's motto is that exceptional quality can only be achieved through strict selection. His knowledge and experience with La Rioja vineyards make him one of the most appreciated winemakers in the region. The vineyards are spread over the villages of Samaniego, Laguardia, Leza and Elciego which are located in the most beautiful part of the Rioja namely the Rioja Alavesa. The bottom of the vineyards have a limestone clay composition with abundance of gravel and small round stones. Remirez de Ganuza only works with very old vines with an average age of 60 years or older. About 90% of the vines are Tempranillo, the rest of the vineyards include Graciano, Viura and Malvasia. The vineyards are 'en gobelet' but with a support on wire so that there is a larger exposure to the sun and better photosynthesis. A unique system that Fernando developed himself.
At the Remirez de Ganuza winery, the grapes undergo a strict selection, which also shows how quality-conscious but also how innovative Fernando is making absolute top wine. All grapes are harvested by hand and the grapes are first "rested" in the cooling chamber for 24 hours. First is separation from the bottom and shoulders of each cluster. Only the “los hombros” or the shoulders (the top part of the bunch of grapes) are used for his Reserva wines (Fincas de Ganuza, Remirez de Ganuza reserva and gran reserva and Trasnocho) because these are the most ripe grapes with the most sun seen.
