The Manzone Barolo Serralunga comes from the younger vineyards in the cru Meriame in the comune (municipality) of Serralunga d'Alba in Barolo. The vineyards are located at an altitude of 350 meters and are oriented to the south/southeast. The soil consists mainly of clay and limestone. The vines are about 25 years old. Fermentation takes place in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature. Subsequently, the wine matures for 24 months in wood, of which at least 60% in large barrels of Slavonian wood (3,000 litres) and the rest in French tonneaux (350 litres).

In the glass, the Manzone Barolo Serralunga 2017 has the typical Barolo light ruby red color. In the nose we smell notes of rose petals, prunes, tar, wood. The Barolo is powerful but refined at the same time with aromas of cherries and plums supplemented with earthy tones, good structure, full tannins. Delicious with charcuterie, for example bresaola, salami and spicy sausage. Also delicious with a stew with beef and mushrooms.

ABOUT MERIAME
Meriame is the emerging Barolo cru. The popularity of the cru Meriame is relatively new. Paolo Manzone's eponymous Cascina Meriame certainly played a part in that. Since 1999 he has been making beautiful Barolos, including a 100% Meriame. Meriame forms a kind of amphitheater that protects the vines from winter frosts and the summer heat. There is always a good balance between heat and humidity. The soils from the Lequio formation are calcareous and provide strength and structure. Substantial wines with an earthy character come from the best parts of the cru Meriame, in the middle and at the top. The wines from the lower part are more elegant in style.

ABOUT MANZONE
In the rustic Serralunga d'Alba, in the heart of the DOCG Barolo, lies the cru Meriame, where Paolo Manzone planted his Nebbiolo for his main wines. The vineyard dates back to 1948 and the vines are sometimes up to 70 years old. Manzone has been inspired by Burgundy and makes Barolos that mature in French Burgundy barrels. They are Barolos in a fairly modern style, which match the accessible and somewhat earthy style Barolos that the cru Meriame delivers.

Vineyard for 2019 Paolo Manzone Barolo Serralunga

Paolo Manzone, long-time winemaker for wine giant Giordano, has achieved his dream. He owns ten hectares of vineyard in Piedmont, 4 of which have the prestigious Barolo appellation and 6 in the Alba area. One Barolo bears the name of the sub-district of Serralunga - homeland of long-lived, fairly vigorous Barolos - and comes from 15-year-old vines. The other is a "single vineyard" or Cru: Meriame, planted 60 years ago
