Description
With vines planted in 1992 in a commanding and protected location in the hills above Gattinara at 400 meters, the Molsino vineyard is known for producing extra fruit weight, concentration and power. This is certainly the case with the Conterno Nervi 2018 Gattinara Vigna Molsino. Two wines are made from one vineyard on this estate (the other is the Vigna Valferana). Roberto Conterno described this wine as having "broader shoulders" and "more bite in the mouthfeel."
This fantastic Conterno Nervi 2018 Gattinara Vigna Molsino.in Magnum format has aromas of dark cherry/plum fruit, sage, menthol, new leather and dark spices. Powerful yet elegant in the glass, the Molsino has enormous drive as it builds to a deep, beautiful finish that is utterly enchanting. Barolo lover! Try this!!
Italo Nervi opened his winery in 1906 with vineyards that had been in the family since 1679. He was the first in the Gattinara region. Nervi and his succeeding generations have continued to build on the reputation of the winery. It is the oldest and best winery in Gattinara in Alto Piemonte, the northern part of Piedmont. In 2018, all eyes were on Gattinara when Roberto Conterno of the famous Barolo winery Giacomo Conterno bought 90% of Nervi, while the then owners Kathrine and Erling Astrup remained partners for 10%. The owners of Nervi wanted to sell their winery on the condition that it would end up in good hands. They found their partner in Roberto Conterno, with whom they had been good friends for years.

With vines planted in 1992 in a cozy and protected position within the folds of hills above Gattinara at 400 meters in elevation, the Molsino vineyard is known to produce extra fruit weight, concentration and power. This is definitely the case with the Conterno Nervi 2018 Gattinara Vigna Molsino. Of the two single-vineyard wines made at this estate (the other being the Vigna Valferana), I'm giving the aging edge to this bottle and have extended the drinking window as a result. During my tasting with Roberto Conterno, he described this wine as having "broader shoulders" and "more bite to the mouthfeel." Those are exact descriptions, and I would add that Molsino shows special dimension, in terms of both width and depth, with red and purple fruits that spread evenly over the palate. The wine's finish is powered by tarry smoke and campfire ash that add vertical lift and length.
In keeping with the evolution of this producer, I had changed the brand name from Nervi to Nervi Conterno to reflect what you see on the newly redesigned front labels of the new releases. Starting with the 2018 vintage, the name is once again modified as Conterno Nervi (switching the two words), and I have once again recorded this change in our database. All the wines in this report fall under the header Conterno Nervi, although the older vintages still read just Nervi, or Nervi with the name Conterno in smaller print on the front label. This progressive graphic evolution falls in step with the production control gained by Roberto Conterno in the immediate vintages following his acquisition of Nervi. I tasted the two cru expressions, Vigne Molsino and Valferana, before their commercial release during my visit to the winery in Gattinara this past summer. The big news is the addition of a new rosé sparkling wine that you will find reviewed here for the first time.

The 2018 Gattinara Molsino emerges from a relatively warm, sunny spot on the estate at 400 meters in elevation. It presents myriad shades of dark cherry/plum fruit, sage, menthol, new leather and dark spices. Potent and virile in the glass, the Molsino possesses tremendous drive as it builds into a deep, beautifully resonant finish that is utterly captivating. It's a remarkable effort for the first year in which Roberto Conterno and his team were in charge. The ambition is pretty clear. Molsino will soon be the Monfortino of Alto Piemonte.

I fully expected that Roberto Conterno would elevate quality at Nervi upon his acquisition of the winery in 2018. What I did not expect was that the change would happen so fast and that the makeover would be so extreme. A historic estate, Nervi had fallen on rough times in which quality was all over the place. Before his acquisition, Conterno had started consulting on an informal basis for the former owners, so he had a running start. Even so, the investments here have been considerable and include a new winery and a state of the art bottling line, which means Conterno owns two more of these gleaming machines than most wineries around the world. It was not that long ago that Conterno answered all phone calls himself at the family winery in Monforte. Since then, he has elevated the wines at two estates through passion, conviction and relentless drive. Just as impressively, though, Conterno has built a strong team to execute on his vision. The importance of that can’t possibly be overstated. As for the 2018 Gattinaras, they are special wines that very much merit your consideration.

Giacomo Conterno is an iconic Italian wine producer based in the Barolo wine region of Piedmont, Italy. The winery is known for its traditional winemaking practices and dedication to producing high-quality Barolo's.
History of Giacomo Conterno
The winery was founded in 1908 by Giacomo Conterno in the town of Monforte d'Alba, located in the heart of the Barolo wine region in Piedmont, Italy. In its early years, the winery focused on making wines from Nebbiolo, the main grape variety used in the production of Barolo. After the death of Giacomo Conterno in 1930, his son Giovanni Conterno took over the estate. Giovanni continued the family tradition of producing high quality Barolo's. An important milestone for the winery was the acquisition of the Cascina Francia vineyard in the 1970s. Located in the municipality of Serralunga d'Alba, this vineyard became an important source for some of Giacomo Conterno's most prestigious wines. In the 1980s, a divorce occurred within the Conterno family, leading to the creation of two separate wineries, Giacomo Conterno and Aldo Conterno. Aldo, Giovanni's brother, subsequently founded his own successful winery.
Giacomo Conterno, under the leadership of Giovanni's son Roberto Conterno, continued the family's focus on traditional winemaking methods.
Production by Giacomo Conterno
Giacomo Conterno is often associated with the traditional style of Barolo production. Traditional Barolo is characterized by longer maceration periods and aging in large Slavonian oak barrels. These practices contribute to wines with complex flavors, firm tannins and excellent aging potential. It also has to do with the specific vineyards of the winery. The winery is located in the municipality of Monforte d'Alba, one of the most important areas within Barolo. Giacomo Conterno's specific vineyards include some of the best crus (individual vineyards) in the region, including the famous Cascina Francia vineyard. The estate's dedication to specific vineyards emphasizes the importance of terroir in the production of their wines. The Cascina Francia vineyard is also particularly important to Giacomo Conterno. The wines produced from this vineyard are highly sought after for their depth, structure and aging potential. Cascina Francia has been a major source for some of the estate's most prestigious Barolo wines.
Philosophy of Giacomo Conterno
Giacomo Conterno is known for his minimalist and traditional winemaking approach. The winery typically uses long maceration periods, maturation in large Slavonian oak barrels for an extended period and minimal intervention to allow the wines to express the characteristics of the terroir. Giacomo Conterno's wines are highly regarded among collectors and enthusiasts for their complexity and ability to showcase the unique characteristics of the region. The estate has played a major role in shaping Barolo's reputation as one of Italy's finest wine regions.
