Description
The Dominus 2018 was ranked #1 in Wine Spectator's Top 100 Wines of 2021.
The origins of the vineyard of the cult winery Dominus Estate in Napa Valley date back to 1836, when it was called the Napanook Vineyard. This makes it one of the oldest vineyards in California, and therefore also in the United States. Napanook later became part of the winery Inglenook, which in turn became the property of the Californian wine pioneer John Daniel in 1946. After his death, his daughters Robin Lail and Marcia Smith inherited the 44-hectare Napanook vineyard in 1982 and asked oenologist Christian Moueix to enter into a partnership with them. At the time, Christian Moueix was responsible as director and winemaker for top Bordeaux wineries such as Petrus, Château Trotanoy and Château La Fleur-Pétrus. With the first vintage of 1983 of this new Californian winery, Christian Moueix chose the name Dominus Estate. That Christian Moueix has given his heart to Dominus Estate, of which he has been the sole owner since 1995, is evident from his total dedication and commitment to achieving the ultimate result. Dominus, with the use of grape varieties such as Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc, is a wine with clear Bordeaux aristocrat
The 2018 Dominus is a blend of mainly Cabernet Sauvignon supplemented with Petit Verdot and Cabernet Franc matured on 40% new oak and 60% 2nd year. The Proprietary Red Dominus is deep purple-black in color in the glass. In the nose still quite reserved in this youthful stage (toddlerhood) but after some swirling subtle notes of potpourri, Asian herbs, cedar, cigar, blackberries, black cherries with an occasional hint of currant, new leather and smoked meat emerge. The taste is medium to full-bodied with a densely packed mid-palate and freshness framed by very ripe, fine-grained tannins and peppered with earthy accents. It offers incredible liveliness with black and red fruit in the mid-palate ending with a very long finish. Perhaps most telling is the comment from Lisa Perrotti-Brown of the Wine Advocate (Parker): “ If I could give more than 100 for this one, I would ”.

Very deep garnet-purple colored, the 2018 Dominus slowly emerges from the glass with profound notes of blackcurrant cordial, ripe black plums, boysenberries and Black Forest cake with hints of violets, star anise, cracked black pepper, raspberry leaves and pencil lead, plus a touch of garrigue. Medium to full-bodied, the palate delivers impactful black fruit layers, creating a beguiling sense of richness that is beautifully countered by invigorating freshness and great poise, framed by super ripe, plush tannins and beautiful tension, finishing on a lingering fragrant earth note and, finally, lots of mineral sparks. For all that it is at the moment, one cannot help but feel that this 2018 is holding something back. Give it a good five years in bottle, at least, and then get set for what I suspect will be a mind-blowing transformation over the next 30 years+.
"This is an example of a cool ripening vintage," Dominus's technical director, Tod Mostero, said. "It was a late season—everything was late from budbreak onward. We started harvesting on October 1st, then we got about an inch of rain, so we stopped, then we started again on the 9th and continued to the 15th."
Proprietor Christian Moueix added, "We thought the elements of the 2018 vintage were very refined, and we wanted to play on that in the wine. It was the wines with a lot of delicacy and precision that went into the Dominus blend this year."
The grace, purity and precision of this 2018 Dominus is absolutely captivating right now. And yet, poised on the brink of perfection, its promise of something more with time in bottle is at the heart of its allure. Embrace this wine for the very fact that it doesn't give you everything up front and all at once.

This is incredible on the nose, offering hot stones, blackcurrants, iodine and wet earth. Full-bodied with a tight center palate, then it opens with a tannin structure that is weightless and spreads across the palate. Totally integrated on the palate. This is a magic-carpet wine. Really incredible. One of the reference points for the vintage. Drinkable now and please try a bottle, but it’s one for the cellar.

From: The 2019 Napa Valley Cabernets: A Deep Dive (Jan 2022)
The 2018 Dominus has really shut down over the last year. I underestimated its imposing structure and density, both of which are on fully display today. The 2018 is a potent Dominus endowed with superb depth and tons of vertical explosive energy allied to a feeling of elegance that becomes increasingly apparent over time. Dark fruit, spice and a whole range of earthy, savory notes add layers of complexity. Superb.

Dominus Estate, owned by famed winemaker and CEO Christian Moueix (also owner of Pétrus, Trotanoy, La Fleur-Petrus, Hosanna, among others), is part of the Napanook Historical Landmark and widely regarded as one of the oldest vineyards (1836) of Napa Valley, California. The estate was bought in 1946 by the legendary winemaker and visionary John Daniels, and passed to his daughters in 1970.
In 1982, they entered into a partnership with Christian Moueix, which resulted in Dominus Estate. Moueix bought all the shares in 1995 and is therefore now the sole owner. The first Dominus wine appeared in 1983 and immediately gained international attention thanks to the influence of Moueix.
Dominus Estate produces a second wine, Napanook, first marketed in 1996, and a third called “Othello”, an entry-level wine. The domain covers 44 hectares, divided into 14 plots with mainly Cabernet Sauvignon (87%). However, it also says some petit verdot and cabernet franc. The merlot grape has not been used for the “Grand Vin” since 2002, but is still occasionally used in the Napanook wines. The winery, which was built in 1996, is made of stones held together with metal wire and represents the terroir of the vineyard. The architectural style is completely in harmony with the landscape and protects against the heat during the day and the cold at night.
