Description
In 1976, Domenico Clerico took over his father's company together with his wife Giuliana. The company had 4.5 hectares of vineyards located in the most beautiful places in the Barolo area in Piedmont. Domenico now has 21 hectares of vineyard in the Barolo area in Montforte d'Alba and Serralunga d'Alba. No insecticides, pesticides or fertilizers are used in the vineyards. He likes to release single vineyard wines, because in his opinion they best reflect the terroir. His wines are usually rich, aromatic and relatively easy to approach even when young. All in all, a producer who is internationally acclaimed because he goes to great lengths to make quality wines that are balanced and because he constantly reviews his methods in search of perfection.
This beautiful Barolo is made from 100% Nebbiolo grapes. The Ginestra vineyard (4ha) is located in the heart of the Barolo. The vines were planted around 1985. In the vineyard, the work is done entirely by hand. In October the grapes are carefully selected and picked manually. After a gentle pressing, they undergo the fermentation process on the skins for a period of 15 to 20 days. The further maturation of the wine takes place partly for a period of 24 months in Slovenian oak barrels and partly for a period of 18 to 24 months in French oak barrels, of which 40% are new and 60% previously used. After this, the wine is blended and bottled. The wine remains in the bottle in the cellars of the domain for a number of months before it is released on the market.
The Dominico Clerico Barolo has an intense ruby red color with elegant, complex scents of tobacco, black cherries, espresso, raspberry, licorice and herbs on the nose. The taste is full, powerful and harmonious due to the sweetness of the tannins. The aftertaste is powerful and long lasting.

The classic 2016 Barolo by Domenico Clerico is a generous and full wine that offers a panoramic view of the Nebbiolo grape all in bright Technicolor and with the appropriate intensity. The wine's all-encompassing approach brings many details into focus, including wild cherry, spice, leather and ferrous soil. Fruit is exclusively from Monforte d'Alba, with some from the lower parts of Pajana and Per Cristina and some from the younger vines planted in Ciabot Mentin. This is an elegant expression with the mild oak signature that is an important part of the Clerico playlist. Camphor ash and burnt embers lift lightly as the wine opens in the glass. It ages in barrique for eight months, followed by another year in larger oak casks. Some 20,000 bottles were released.
With the passing of Domenico Clerico, this historic winery is now managed by Winemaker and General Director Oscar Arrivabene. Some of the latest releases have been staggered, with the 2014 vintage hitting the market in March of last year and the 2015 vintage released in September 2019. The 2016 vintage is released on schedule. For this reason, I have included reviews of both 2015 and 2016 Baroli Pajana, Ciabot Mentin and Aeroplan Servaj. I've also included a review of the 2010 Barolo Per Cristina, a wine that was not made in 2009. Oscar tells me that he started making an expression from Bussia last year, so it should be interesting to see how that wine develops before its release in four years' time.

Domenico took over his father's vineyards in 1976 in Monforte d'Alba, on the south side of the Barolo area. Unlike his father, who was a grape grower, he made and bottled the wine himself from the start. Gradually he was able to increase the vineyard area from 5 to about 25 hectares with beautifully situated plots, including in the famous cru Ginestra. Although Domenico is considered one of the 'modernisti' because he works with rotofermenters and barriques, he has always put work in the vineyard first.
He is no longer a modernist in the basement either. Domenico thinks that he had to adapt to the changed climatic conditions during winemaking: working the same as around 2000 would, in his view, result in too high an alcohol content and an unwieldy wine. He is constantly looking for the right balance in his wines. For example, he now uses a little less barriques and more blunt and less new wood. Also, the maceration times in the rotofermenters have increased from 5 days to more than 20, with the rotary vanes barely operating. No insecticides, pesticides or fertilizers are used in the vineyards. He likes to release single vineyard wines, because in his view they best reflect the terroir. His wines are usually rich, aromatic and even relatively easy to approach when young. All in all a producer that is internationally acclaimed because he goes to great lengths to make quality wines that are in balance and because he constantly revises his methods in search of perfection. After Domenico's death, his wife Giuliana continued to manage the vineyards and the cellar.
Domenico Clerico's wines are modern and accessible at a young age compared to other Piedmont wines. They are highly appreciated internationally!
