Persoonlijke gegevens
The 2025 Château Trotanoy belongs to the absolute elite of Pomerol and demonstrates once again why this iconic estate is one of the most sought-after addresses in Bordeaux. In a warm and dry vintage, Trotanoy manages to combine its characteristic power, depth, and structure with striking refinement and precision. The result is an impressive wine that will require patience, but will richly reward it.
Winery Château Trotanoy
Château Trotanoy is considered one of the historical greats of Pomerol and is part of the prestigious Moueix portfolio. The name Trotanoy is said to derive from the French "trop ennuie," a reference to the heavy clay soils that were once difficult to cultivate. It is precisely these soils that today form the basis for one of the most characterful and long-lasting wines of Pomerol. Trotanoy is known for its powerful structure, deep concentration, and enormous aging potential. More information about this winery can be found under the Winery tab.
The wine and blend
The 2025 consists of 96% Merlot and 4% Cabernet Franc. The Merlot provides impressive depth, richness, and texture, while Cabernet Franc adds extra tension, freshness, and aromatic complexity. This blend aligns perfectly with Trotanoy's classic style.
Vineyard, terroir and vintage
The vineyards of Trotanoy are situated on one of the most exceptional terroirs of Pomerol, characterized by a combination of deep clay and iron-rich subsoils. These soils retain water exceptionally well and offer the old vines protection during hot and dry years such as 2025.
The harvest took place between September 1 and 19. Thanks to the natural reserves of the terroir, the grapes remained fresh and balanced, despite the heat of the season. The vintage here yields a wine with enormous concentration, but also with striking energy and balance.
Vinification and aging
After careful selection, the grapes are vinified separately to optimally preserve the identity of each plot. The wine then ages in oak barrels, approximately 50% of which are new. The aging supports the structure and complexity without overpowering the character of the terroir.
Color, smell and taste
Deep ruby red to purple in color. On the nose, aromas of black cherries, cassis, blueberries, and ripe blackberries dominate, complemented by spices, lavender, blood orange, and subtle notes of fruitcake and new oak.
On the palate, Trotanoy displays his impressive class. The wine is full and layered, with a powerful core of dark fruit supported by exceptionally refined tannins. Neal Martin speaks of cashmere-like tannins, while James Suckling emphasizes the energy and precision. The structure is imposing yet perfectly integrated. The finish is long, deep, and harmonious, with the wine revealing increasing complexity the longer it lingers in the glass.
Summary of professional reviews
The 2025 Château Trotanoy is among the highest-rated Pomerols of the vintage. James Suckling awards 97-98 points and praises the combination of blueberries, blood orange, lavender, and the impressive energy on the mid-palate. William Kelley (The Wine Advocate, 94-96 points) calls Trotanoy the most powerful wine in the 2025 Moueix portfolio and points to the combination of ripe fruit, structure, and underlying tension. Neal Martin (95-97 points) particularly emphasizes the harmony, precision, and silky tannins that culminate in an impressive finish. The general consensus is that this is once again a great Trotanoy with exceptional aging potential.

The most powerful wine in the Mouiex cellars this year is the 2025 Trotanoy. Offering up aromas of ripe black fruits, fruitcake and spices, framed by a deft touch of new oak, it's full-bodied, layered and muscular, with plenty of ripe tannin and sweet fruit but good underlying energy, too. This will require some patience.

The 2025 Trotanoy was picked September 1 to 19 and matured in 50% new oak. This is quite powerful on the nose, almost pastille-like purity with black cherries and cassis scents, although I would not say it belongs in the top drawer of aromatics from this estate. The palate is very smooth thanks to its cashmere tannins. Perfectly judged acidity, very poised, very harmonious and deep towards the finish, this Pomerol finishes on a real high and delivers exactly what you want from one of the best Pomerol estates. The longer you stay with it, the more it seduces.

Trotanoy is considered one of the best chateaus of Pomerol. Owner is Christian Moueix, who also owns renowned chateaus such as Hosanna, Latour à Pomerol and Bélair Monange. In the small appellation of Pomerol, Château Pétrus is perhaps the most famous, but many connoisseurs know by now that Trotanoy is just as impressive. An opinion shared by the American Robert Parker, who values Trotanoy extremely highly in recent years.
Château Trotanoy, bought by Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1953, has been considered one of the premier crus of Pomerol from the eighteenth century. Since 2009, a selection of gravel-based plots in the northeastern part of the estate has been dedicated to Espérance de Trotanoy, a wine that is fruity and approachable after only a few years of storage, but retains the depth, complexity and incredible concentration of flavor that are so characteristic for the unique terroir of Trotanoy.
The Trotanoy vineyard, located in one of the best exposed areas of the plateau slopes gently to the west. The soil is a very dense mixture of clay and gravel which tends to solidify when it dries out to an almost concrete-like hardness after rain, hence the name "Trot-anoy", - "too tiring" to cultivate.
The soil at the highest point of exposure contains a high proportion of gravel and gradually becomes more dominated by clay as the elevation decreases. Beneath this clay is a subsoil of red gravel and an impenetrable layer of hard, iron-rich soil known as "crasse de fer". This fascinating soil diversity gives the wines strength, depth and complexity. Produced in limited quantities and only in certain years, Espérance de Trotanoy is vinified in small concrete barrels and aged in French oak barrels.
