Pomerol and the 2021 vintage

Pomerol is known for its compact, textured wines in which Merlot plays a leading role. The combination of clay and gravel creates depth, tension, and a characteristic softness in the tannins.

The 2021 vintage was cool and demanding, with a late growing season and low alcohol levels. For La Conseillante, this resulted in a wine with freshness, precision, and a strikingly classic balance. The late harvest brought aromatic clarity and refined structure.

Vineyards and terroir of La Conseillante

The vineyards of Château La Conseillante lie on a mosaic of clay and gravel soils with iron-rich elements. These soils contribute to the tension, minerality, and finesse so characteristic of the estate.

In 2021, intensive work was carried out in the vineyard, including double defoliation and careful grape protection. This resulted in healthy, perfectly ripe grapes despite the challenging season.

Grape varieties and composition

The 2021 Château La Conseillante is blended from 85% Merlot and 15% Cabernet Franc. Merlot provides texture, roundness, and juicy fruit, while Cabernet Franc adds freshness, floral notes, and length.

This ratio perfectly matches the cool character of the vintage and emphasises the refined style of the château.

Harvest and vinification

The harvest took place exceptionally late, from September 28th to early October. This late picking ensured full aromatic ripeness while retaining fresh acidity.

After fermentation, the wine matured for approximately 18 months in French oak barrels, approximately 70% of which were new, supplemented by once-used barrels and a small portion of amphora. During aging, the wine was racked three times and lightly fined with egg white. The wine was bottled in June.

Magnum size and maturation advantage

This wine is offered in a magnum format. Due to the larger bottle size, the wine develops more slowly and evenly than in a standard bottle. This promotes the integration of tannins and acidity and significantly extends the drinking window. Magnum is particularly well-suited for a refined and taut wine like La Conseillante.

Color, smell and taste

In the glass, the wine reveals a deep ruby red color. The nose is elegant and expressive, with aromas of black raspberry, blackberry, and mulberry, complemented by rose petal, lavender, spices, and a subtle smoky note.

On the palate, the wine is medium to full-bodied, with a velvety-smooth attack and a layered, precise mid-palate. The tannins are exceptionally fine and silky, while fresh acidity adds tension and length. The finish is long, aromatic, and refined.

Structure, style and storage potential

The 2021 Château La Conseillante is built on finesse and precision rather than power. The style is understated, floral, and utterly harmonious, with an almost Burgundian refinement.

Thanks to its balance, fresh acidity, and refined tannins, this wine has exceptional aging potential. In magnum format, it can easily mature for decades and continue to reveal more nuance.

Château La Conseillante

Located in Pomerol, Château La Conseillante has a rich history dating back to the 18th century. The name "La Conseillante" refers to the influential merchant Catherine Conseillan, who bought and expanded the estate. In 1871, it became the property of the Nicolas family, who have managed the vineyard with care for generations since.

Vineyard and Terroir

The La Conseillante vineyard covers 12 hectares and is located on both the Pomerol plateau and in the Saint-Émilion appellation. The soil consists of a mix of clay and gravel, with sub-soils rich in iron oxide. This unique terroir is ideal for growing Merlot and Cabernet Franc, which combine to produce wines with a smooth, creamy texture and distinctive power.

Environment

Since 2016, La Conseillante has taken significant steps to reduce their environmental impact. The estate has achieved ISO 14001 and HVE 3 certifications, which means they have high standards in the areas of biodiversity, disease control, and fertilizer and water management. They use more than 80% organic and/or biocontrol products and apply biodynamic agriculture and phytotherapy.

Vinification and Wine Styles

The wines of La Conseillante are characterized by their finesse, balance and silky texture. The vinification takes place in 22 concrete barrels, each corresponding to a specific plot. The wines are aged in 70% new oak barrels, 27% second-year barrels and 3% in amphoras. This approach ensures optimal expression of the terroir and a refined taste.
