The House of Louis Roederer: Timeless elegance and vision

Louis Roederer is one of the few Champagne houses that has remained entirely family-owned. Since its founding in 1776 in Reims, the house has been known for its meticulous attention to detail and its commitment to pure, expressive Champagnes. Roederer owns over 240 hectares of its own vineyards, spread across the finest crus of Champagne. This allows the house to manage its grapes entirely independently and guarantees that only the highest quality is used. Roederer's style is refined, mineral, and always focused on a balance between power and elegance.

A collaboration between Roederer and Philippe Starck

For the Brut Nature 2018, Louis Roederer once again collaborated with world-renowned designer Philippe Starck. This collaboration, which began in 2006, revolves around the idea of purity and simplicity—a Champagne without makeup, directly reflecting the character of the vintage. Starck not only designed the minimalist label but also co-created the concept: a wine that strips away unnecessary elements and draws its identity purely from terroir and climate. The Brut Nature 2018 is the third edition of this collaborative project and perfectly reflects the idea of natural expression and clarity.

The 2018 vintage: ripe, sunny and perfectly balanced

2018 was an exceptional year in Champagne. The summer was warm and dry, resulting in perfectly ripe grapes in excellent health. At the same time, cool nights and ample water reserves preserved freshness and acidity. The result is a vintage that is both generous and energetic—an ideal base for a Brut Nature without dosage. The wine is vinified from a blend of approximately 55% Pinot Noir, 25% Pinot Meunier, and 20% Chardonnay. The estate used grapes exclusively from its own biodynamically farmed vineyards in the Vallée de la Marne.

Vinification and style of the Brut Nature 2018

This cuvée is all about purity. The base wines are partially vinified in oak and then blended without the addition of dosage. The second fermentation in the bottle and aging on the lees lasted several years, allowing the wine to develop depth and texture without losing its vibrant freshness. The Brut Nature 2018 is a Champagne with a distinctive character, perfectly balancing fruit, minerality, and structure. The alcohol content is approximately 12%, and thanks to the absence of dosage, the mouthfeel is particularly taut and energetic.

Color, smell and taste

The Champagne displays a bright golden yellow color with fine, persistent bubbles. The aroma reveals notes of citrus, ripe apple, toasted almond, and brioche, followed by a subtle chalky minerality. On the palate, the wine is dry, refreshing, and precise, with layered flavors of white fruit, lime, and lightly toasted hazelnut. The finish is long, clean, and salty, with an almost tactile tension typical of the Brut Nature style. It is a wine that combines elegance and intensity in a rare natural way.

Expected availability

The Louis Roederer Brut Nature 2018 is expected to be available in November 2025. This edition also comes in Starck's signature design—sleek, contemporary, and minimalist. The edition is limited, and demand for this unique collaboration is traditionally high. Anyone wanting to secure a few bottles is advised to reserve early.

The 2018 Brut Nature is the successor to the 2015 and is already being compared to the legendary 1999'er

Louis Roederer is a prestigious champagne producer based in the Champagne region of France. The House of Louis Roederer is known for its commitment to quality, traditional winemaking methods and its signature cuvée, Cristal.

History of Louis Roederer

Louis Roederer was founded in 1776 by a German wine merchant named Louis Roederer. The house started as a wine shop and became involved in the production of Champagne in the early 19th century. In 1827, Louis Roederer's cousin, Adolphe Roederer, took over the business. Adolphe played a crucial role in the expansion and growth of this producer. He traveled extensively to build relationships with European courts, including the Russian Imperial Court. In 1876, Louis Roederer created the iconic Cristal Champagne. It was originally produced exclusively for the Russian Tsars and was presented in a crystal clear bottle, which is the origin of the name 'Cristal'. Louis Roederer remained a family business for many years. However, in 1932 the Rouzaud family, relatives of the Roederer family, took over the house. The Rouzaud family owns and manages Louis Roederer to this day. Like many companies in Champagne, Louis Roederer faced challenges during the World Wars, including damage to their cellars. Despite these difficulties, they persevered and continued to produce exceptional champagne. Louis Roederer has a long history of producing high quality champagnes. They are known for their traditional winemaking methods, including hand harvesting, fermentation in oak barrels and long-term aging in cellars.

Cristal

One of the most famous Champagnes produced by Louis Roederer is Cristal. Created in 1876, Cristal is a prestigious and luxurious cuvée originally produced for the Russian Tsars. It is typically a blend of Chardonnay and Pinot Noir grapes with Chardonnay as the dominant grape variety. They are known for their exceptional quality, elegance and aging potential. It is known for its fine, persistent bubbles, a rich and creamy texture and a harmonious balance of flavors and aromas. Cristal is highly regarded by wine critics and collectors worldwide. It consistently receives high ratings and is considered one of the best Champagnes available. Bottles of Cristal are often collected and aged for special occasions. The clear crystal bottle in which Cristal was originally presented was changed to a conventional bottle design in the early 20th century. This change was made to protect the taste and quality of the wine, as the clear glass was found to be sensitive to light exposure. Today, Cristal is usually bottled in an elegant, clear glass bottle with gold packaging.

Louis Roederer's vineyards

Louis Roederer owns and manages vineyards in the best Champagne crus, including the Grand Cru vineyards of Verzenay, Verzy and Ay, among others. These vineyards supply the grapes for their exceptional wines.

Assortment by Louis Roederer

In addition to Cristal, Louis Roederer produces a range of other champagnes, including Brut Premier, Vintage Brut, Rosé and Blanc de Blancs. These wines suit a wide range of preferences and occasions. Louis Roederer's Champagnes have received critical acclaim from wine critics and publications around the world and are considered some of the finest Champagnes produced in the region.
