Description
It should be abundantly clear by now that little white was made in Burgundy in 2021. But it is now becoming increasingly clear that the wines that were made are among the greatest that have been made to date. Because many 1er Cru wines have ended up in Bourgogne Blanc or Village wine due to scarcity, it is precisely the 1er Crus and GrandCru's that are very scarce.
In the 50s and 60s, Corton Charlemagne was one of the greatest white wines from Burgundy. In recent years, they have made a comeback and Corton Charlemagne is more sought after than ever now that DRC, Bizot, Millemann and Ramonet have bought a piece. The other Cru is the largest you can find in the world in white. (Le) Montrachet. Magical Mythical wines. With a total size of just under 8 Ha, it is logical that you rarely come across these wines. 18 owners share this white gold. Many do not know that this Grandcru vineyard is located in both Chassagne Montrachet and Puligny Montrachet. The border is somewhere in the middle (right of Romanee Conti and left of Bouchard). Officially, they call the wines from Chassagne “Le Montrachet” and from Puligny “Montrachet”, but only a few put “Le” on the label.
The Louis Latour Montrachet Grand Cru has a clear and light yellow colour. The nose is very intense, with aromas of almond, vanilla and honeysuckle. Sufficient, fresh and dense in the mouth, with notes of marzipan, again vanilla and juice. Insanely beautiful aftertaste.

The 2017 Montrachet Grand Cru unfurls in the glass with notes of ripe, smoky orchard fruit, mandarin and a generous framing of classy new oak. On the palate, it's full-bodied, broad and layered, with good depth and structuring extract that frames its ripe, gourmand core of fruit, concluding with a saline finish. This is a promising but comparatively extrovert offering.
Since Louis Fabrice Latour's office enjoys a view of my Beaune apartment, I am especially pleased to report that this tasting of Maison Louis Latour's 2017s was a decidedly positive experience. In the last few years, longer cuvaisons mean that the reds have taken on more depth and dimension, and while—as is natural—not all cuvées are created equal, this venerable address is now turning out some of the most interesting reds it has produced in years. Impressively, a 2016 Chambertin, followed over the course of a week from an open bottle, only gained in aromatic range and mid-palate amplitude with each passing day. On the white side of the ledger, Latour has taken steps to prevent the problems of premature oxidation that have bedeviled the wines in recent years: since smaller cuvées pick up proportionally more oxygen in the bottling process, the maison has reduced their number; and now the whites are racked only once, not twice. The 2016 whites were showing well, performing better in bottle than their frequently rather corpulent 2015 counterparts at the same stage, though one or two cuvées, most notably the emblematic Corton-Charlemagne, didn't display as much texture and substance as I had found when I tasted them from barrel a year earlier. The fleshy, succulent 2017 whites are promising, and I hope all that promise will make it into bottle. In summation, this important source—with whose wares many consumers no doubt experience their first encounters with Burgundy—is evolving in the right direction, and for that wine lovers have every reason to be grateful.

A very impressive nose with plenty of lemon and grapefruit on offer, as well as hazelnutty oak influence and some stony nuances. Very rich and quite exotic fruit on the palate, in the peach, nectarine and mango spectrum. Well cast oak warms and spices up the finish. Complex and generous Bâtard. Drink or hold.
