Description
The Harlan Estate is inky black with a purple edge and offers a beautiful earthy aroma with blackberry and cherry, lavender, followed by deep, lush, majestic flavor that caresses the palate with refined tannins. Classic earth, oak and laurel character on the nose, along with dark fruits such as currants and blackberries. Forest flowers too. Full to medium body, linear and tight with coolness and freshness. What balance and intensity. Tight in his younger years but full of energy and length. Incredibly sophisticated and seductive. A pleasure to taste now, but try it in 2023, but it is no problem to keep it in the cellar for another 30+ years (but that would be a shame).
Note - the Harlan Estate is an absolute cult wine of which only a maximum of 1500 cases are made annually. Approximately 85% of production remains in the USA and the remainder is distributed among official importers. There are currently more fake Harlan on the market than the real Harlan Estate, so be extremely careful. If the wine has a price that is too-good-to-be-true, it is almost always certain that this is not real and is therefore extremely expensive. As an importer, we receive the wines directly from Harlan Estate and have therefore not made a world trip via many places all over the world in containers in often questionable conditions (hot, cold, etc.) that cannot be checked (as well as on the well-known auction sites). ). Click here to verify the authenticity of the bottles using the code on the label. The Harlan Estate is packaged as standard in a beautiful wooden box with 3 bottles (OWC), but can also be ordered per bottle if desired.

Deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 Harlan Estate needs a little coaxing to reveal captivating iron ore, red currant jelly, cloves and crushed rocks scents with a core of warm cassis, Black Forest cake and boysenberries plus a waft of pencil lead. Medium to full-bodied, it has a firm, grainy texture with a lively backbone and loads of earthy layers, long and mineral laced. This should be one of the longer-lived wines coming out of the 2017 vintage.
“There was a clear dividing line between what we could use and what we couldn’t,” Director Don Weaver commented about Harlan Estate’s 2017 harvest. “The way the community came together was the defining moment for us. In terms of selection, we erred on the highest quality side. The good news is that we had a lot to choose from!” Indeed, Harlan Estate’s no-compromise stance has held them in good stead in 2017. Qualitatively, assuming this barrel sample is an accurate reflection of the final wine (and I have no reason to believe it isn’t), these guys didn’t miss a beat. This said, the 2017 The Maiden is still a work in progress and so wasn’t shown to me at this time.
"2018 had a certain sense of ease to it," Bill Harlan said as we tasted the barrel sample of the next iteration of this iconic label. "The pace was wonderful."
"Mother nature was allowing us an extended runway," winemaker Cory Empting agreed. "We just started picking and couldn’t stop."
As a reminder, Harlan Estate is bottled later than most other Napa Valley Cabernet Sauvignons. While a lot of the Napa 2018s were bottled in and around July 2020, Harlan will not be bottled until late February or early March 2021. This 2018 is looking incredibly youthful and indeed reticent, as are many 2018s, but it bears all the grace and sophistication of a wine nearing completion, promising to be an elegant, perfumed and perhaps even "perfect" expression of this very special piece of Napa turf.

Love the sage and mint undertones with currants and berries. Some lead pencil. Iodine. Medium to full body and very fine tannins. Lovely freshness. It’s a refined and gorgeous Harlan. Savory. Beautiful finish. Drinkable now, but better in 2022.

The 2017 Harlan Estate is superb. Deep, inky and wonderfully expressive, the 2017 is impeccably rendered. All the elements come together effortlessly. The nervous tannins of the vintage are evident, but there is also plenty of sumptuousness. Time in the glass brings out a whole range of red-toned fruit and floral notes that are surprising for a year with massive heat spike. The 2017 is polished and sophisticated to the core. In a word: impressive.

Winemaker Cory Empting describes 2018 as a year with not a lot of rain, but the rain that did fall was well-timed. Harvest was leisurely, as it was throughout most of the valley. In 2018, Empting chose to pick a little earlier than normal, and, also blend earlier. In fact, the 2018 was fully blended when I stopped by in Spring 2019, which is highly unusual. Over the last handful of years, winemaking has moved towards gentler and longer extractions with cooler temperatures, while new oak has come down. The search for finesse is evident in wines that are more elegant and nuanced than ever.
