Description
The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain has slightly piney, resinous herbal notes - thyme and rosemary - along with classic cassis and blueberry fruit. Yes, there is a cedar overlay of oak, but the fruit comes through loud and clear, adding a rich, velvety textural component and delectable berry flavors to the lingering finish. The Dunn Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is a 100% Cabernet Sauvignon that has matured for 32 months in 100% new French oak.
Antonio Galloni writes about the 2017 Dunn Cabernets: "The 2017 Cabernets are some of the most impressive wines I have ever tasted from Randy and Mike Dunn. The wines are a bit richer and riper than in the past, but they also have plenty of the Dunn signatures readers have come to expect. I followed the 2017s over several days, and they just got better and better over time"
At Dunn Vineyards, 42 hectares of Cabernet Sauvignon are cultivated on Howell Mountain. Since 1979, we have done our best to care for these vines so that they produce a wine that tastes like Cabernet Sauvignon from Howell Mountain. Under the leadership of Bill Smith, Randy and several other winemakers and grape growers proposed the distinctive Howell Mountain as an AVA (a separate appellation). The AVA boundary starts at an elevation of 1400' so even if it is cool and foggy on the valley floor, it is sunny and breezy on the mountain. The wine embodies the Howell Mountain Cabernet: deep concentration, bold, massive, ultra rich and elegant.
FACT: The wine is in our conditioned Wine Warehouse and if you pick up the wine you will also receive a nice discount. You will see your discount immediately when you choose Collect in the Checkout page. We are almost next to the Rijksweg with plenty of parking. Click here for our address.
Nothing is easygoing about Randy Dunn's Cabernets, whether it's the dense red wax atop the bottle you need to soften to access the cork, or the uncompromising style that has become his trademark. … The quietly fierce nature of Dunn's wines has never been for all comers. But Dunn has always prided himself on being different.

The mountain really determined the style of the wine. It became obvious right away that the grapes up here were much more powerful than down on the valley floor. I just made the wine itself the same way we did at Caymus, it just was a more tannic wine due to the place.

Already more open than the 2018 Howell Mountain, the 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain boasts slightly piney, resinous herb notes—thyme and rosemary—along with classic cassis and blueberry fruit. Yes, there's a cedary coat of oak, but the fruit comes through loud and clear, adding a rich, velvety textural component and mouthwatering berry flavors on the lingering finish.
Somehow, Dunn fell off the radar of my predecessor after the 2015 vintage. While I didn't have time to backtrack through all of the missed years, I was able to taste the 2017s and 2018s during my visit to the family compound on Howell Mountain. Mike Dunn has taken over most of the winemaking responsibilities from his stepfather, Randy Dunn, but Randy is still around and constantly tinkering. "I end up spending a lot of my time in the barn, fixing stuff," he said.
Randy got his start as a crush hand at Caymus, working for Chuck Wagner in 1975. "I learned a lot at Caymus," he said. "At the time, they had a German winemaker who specialized in Riesling. He didn't know much about red winemaking." Dunn's first vintage under his own label was in 1979—the first few vintages were bottled at Caymus—and in 1985 he left to devote his full time to Dunn.
Back in 1982, Randy purchased bulk wine for his first Napa Valley bottling, "I paid $12.50 per gallon and sold it for $12.50 per bottle," said Dunn. But the supply of good bulk wine dried up around 1990, and he started to purchase grapes.

The 2017 Cabernet Sauvignon Howell Mountain is sure to make Dunn fans happy. Powerful and ample, it marries the natural intensity of the year with the savoriness that makes Howell Mountain Cabernets so distinctive. Dark blue/purplish fruit, graphite, spice, leather, dried herbs and lavender imbue the 2017 with striking intensity and character. I can't wait to see how it ages. The 2017 is a positively stunning edition of the Howell Mountain Cabernet Sauvignon.
