Description
The 2017 vintage is a success for Domaine d'Eugénie and the energetic Michel Mallard, delivering supple, expressive and seductive wines that are true to their underlying appellations. The first vintages at this address were, to be honest, so oaky and uninspired that serious consumers wrote off Domaine d'Eugénie's wines, but that prejudice must now be revised as the wines increasingly deserve their attention.
Clos de Vougeot is one of the oldest Clos in Burgundy and d'Eugénie has 1.37 hectares here. The vines of d'Eugénie are located on the highest part next to the chateau. The vines here are around 60 years old. The soil holds a lot of clay and limestone and the deeper soil more clay silt. It is a full, multi-dimensional wine with good concentration, juicy acidity and rich but satiny tannins that end with a long and well-defined finish. This is a promising wine from Domaine d'Eugénie that always scores high.

Aromas of orange rind, raspberries and cassis mingle with savory nuances of espresso roast, dark chocolate and grilled squab, introducing the 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru, a full-bodied, multidimensional wine with good concentration, succulent acids and rich but satiny structuring tannins that concludes with a long and nicely defined finish. This is a very promising wine from Domaine d'Eugénie that I'd expect to land at the upper end of my banded score.
The 2017 vintage—the eleventh for this new carnation of the erstwhile Domaine Engel—is a success for Domaine d'Eugénie and the energetic Michel Mallard, delivering supple, expressive and seductive wines that are true to their underlying appellations. Early vintages at this address, it's fair to say, were so oaky and uninspired that serious consumers have tended to write off the Domaine d'Eugénie's wines, but that prejudice now needs to be revised, as the wines increasingly merit their attention. Congratulations are due to Mallard and his team for the turnaround they have achieved.

The 2017 Clos Vougeot Grand Cru is well defined and precise, with cranberry, raspberry and vibrant red cherry scents that soar from the glass. The oak here is very well assimilated. The well-balanced palate offers fine but firm tannins that frame the black cherry and raspberry fruit. Lovely tension and mineralité on the finish, which delivers just the right amount of spice and length. Excellent. Tasted blind at the Burgfest 2017 tasting.
