Description
About Château Palmer and Alter Ego
Château Palmer is a Third Growth winery in Margaux and is one of Bordeaux's most prized estates. Since 1998, in addition to the Grand Vin, they have also produced Alter Ego de Palmer, a second cuvée from the same plots but with a lighter style and a more drinkable character. Alter Ego represents approximately 40% of annual production.
Assembly and vintage 2013
The 2013 Alter Ego is blended from roughly equal parts Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, with a small portion of Petit Verdot. It is the last vintage before the full transition to biodynamic farming in 2014.
Vinification and style
The grapes are vinified separately by plot. Fermentation and maceration are controlled, with limited extraction to preserve freshness. Maturation lasts approximately 20–22 months in oak barrels with a lower percentage of new wood than the Grand Vin, which creates subtle oak notes and a soft texture.
Tasting notes: aroma and taste
This wine offers a fresh and vibrant profile with aromas of red and black fruits such as raspberry, cassis, and cherry, combined with floral notes and soft spices. The palate is medium-bodied with elegant acidity, fine, silky tannins, and a length reminiscent of a Grand Vin, yet accessible and clear.
Why order this wine?
Alter Ego 2013 is an excellent choice for lovers of the classic Margaux style, but with a more youthful expression. Its fresh acidity, bright fruit notes, and refined structure make it an attractive option for immediate consumption.

Composed of 52% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Franc and 6% Petit Verdot, the 2015 Alter Ego de Palmer has a medium to deep garnet-purple color and gorgeous nose of ripe plums, cassis and crushed cherries with touches of incense, lavender and chocolate box. Medium-bodied, very finely crafted and vivacious in the mouth, it finishes with great elegance and finesse.

This is sensational, characterized by such purity and beauty and with aromas of blackberries, dark chocolate, walnuts, cedar and lavender. Full-bodied, tight and focused — in part thanks to sensational tannin tension that is intense yet polished. Needs five to six years of bottle age to come together. Great second wine of Palmer.

From: 2015 Bordeaux: Every Bottle Tells a Story... (Feb 2018)
The 2015 Alter Ego is just as alluring today as it was from barrel. Sweet floral notes, spice, dried cherry, mint, tobacco and crushed flowers are all laced together in this silky, mid-weight Margaux. Time in barrel has mellowed some of the exuberance the 2015 showed from barrel. Open-knit, supple and super-expressive, Alter Ego is a winner. Time in the glass brings out aromatic presence of Cabernet Sauvignon.
- By Antonio Galloni on December 2017
These two wines from Palmer are absolutely brilliant. In Thomas Duroux's view, the challenge in 2015 was balancing sugars with acidity and tannin. Potential alcohols were high (in the 14% range), while acidities were low and tannin ripeness in the skins and seeds was healthy. As a result, Duroux chose to do more pumpovers than normal. The resulting wines are sexy, voluptuous and radiant, especially in terms of their feel. The Alter Ego in particular is a fabulous second wine. Harvest took place between September 22 and October 7. Average yields were 37 hectoliters per hectare.

From: Bordeaux’s Radiant 2015s (Apr 2016)
The 2015 Alter Ego is round, succulent and also a terrific introduction to the vintage. Raspberry jam, cinnamon, flowers and mint are all pushed forward. This is an especially succulent, juicy Margaux that is firing on all cylinders. Today, the 2015 gives the impression it will drink well with minimal cellaring, as its balance and overall harmony are first-rate. The blend is 52% Merlot, 42% Cabernet Sauvignon and 6% Petit Verdot.

Château Palmer is located in the heart of the Margaux appellation in the Bordeaux wine region. The 66 hectares of vineyards have a gravel soil and the vines overlook the Gironde River. The area with its rich ancient history and nourishing microclimate is a fantastic environment for the vines. Here they can flourish and grow under the passionate care of the people of Château Palmer. Behind every great wine is a great terroir. This is also the case at Château Palmer, which is located on a long strip of land between the Atlantic Ocean and the Gironde. The land is well drained, rich in the deposits of the Garonne and Dordogne rivers. It is difficult soil for agriculture, but exceptional for grapes. Of course, the vines also need good care in order to perform optimally. And that is certainly entrusted to the employees of Château Palmer! Full of passion and love for the vines, they cultivate the demanding terroir. The people of this winery are more than just colleagues. Together they embrace the common core values of Château Palmer and are therefore extremely dynamic, curious, passionate, open-minded and determined. In short, they live for and with the vineyards.
