Description
Medium to deep garnet-purple in color, the 2017 L'Eglise Clinet starts off a bit closed and somber, but soon unfolds to reveal powerful notes of baked black plums, chocolate-covered cherries and blueberry preserves, with hints of grilled meat, mocha and anise, plus a hint of tar. Medium to full bodied, the palate is a powerhouse of crisp, vibrant black fruit, framed by wonderfully ripe, rounded tannins and an abundance of freshness, with a long and savory finish.
ABOUT L'EGLISE CLINET
L'Eglise Clinet is a prestigious winery in the Pomerol appellation of Bordeaux, France. It is known for producing some of the most sought after and highly regarded wines in the world. The vineyards of L'Eglise Clinet cover approximately 4.2 hectares and are located on Pomerol's famous clay and gravel soils. These soils are ideal for growing Merlot and Cabernet Franc, the domain's main grape varieties. Also relevant to mention is that the vineyards of L'Eglise Clinet border those of Chateau Petrus, so where L'Eglise Clinet stops begins Petrus. L'Eglise Clinet is located in the heart of Pomerol, a small but highly renowned wine region on the right bank of the Dordogne River. The winery has a rich history dating back to the 19th century. The vineyard was formed in its current form in the mid-20th century by the Mauléon and Rouchut families.

Medium to deep garnet-purple colored, the 2017 L'Eglise Clinet begins a little closed and broody, soon unfurling to reveal powerful notes of baked black plums, chocolate-covered cherries and blueberry preserves with hints of chargrill, mocha and aniseed plus a touch of tar. Extremely enticing aromas of blackberries, brambleberries, sweet tobacco, bark and mushrooms follow through to a medium to full body that grows on the palate and crescendoes to medium, round tannins, juicy fruit and a long, flavorful finish. Rolls along the palate. Excellent, persistent finish. Try after 2024, but already a joyous glass.

From: 2017 Bordeaux – Mirror, Mirror on The Wall… (Mar 2020)
The 2017 L'Eglise-Clinet is dark, sensual and wonderfully rich. It opens with a silky, captivating bouquet laced with the essence of dried flowers, mocha, chocolate, spice and blackberry jam. While L'Eglise-Clinet is light on its feet for such a big, imposing wine, the 2017 is going to need a number of years to come into its own. Even in the early going, though, it is super-impressive. Revisiting it with a bit of air reveals a Pomerol of soaring intensity and explosive energy and vivid, striking beauty. I loved it.

History
Château L'Eglise Clinet has a long history dating back to the 19th century. The current estate was created in 1955 when it was formed by the merger of the vineyards of Clos L'Eglise and Château Clinet. Since then, it has developed into one of the top producers in Pomerol.
Vineyard and Terroir
The vineyard area of Château L'Eglise Clinet covers about 4.5 hectares and is located on the famous Pomerol plateau. The vineyards are planted with mainly Merlot (about 85%) and a smaller percentage of Cabernet Franc (about 15%). The soil consists of a mixture of clay and gravel, which is ideal for growing these grape varieties and adds to the complexity and depth of the wines.
Winemaking
Denis Durantou, who managed the estate until his passing in 2020, was known for his meticulous attention to detail and his pursuit of perfection. The grapes are harvested by hand and carefully selected. Fermentation takes place in temperature-controlled stainless steel and concrete barrels, and the wine is then aged in French oak barrels, a significant portion of which is renewed annually.
Wines
The wines of Château L'Eglise Clinet are known for their rich and complex aromas, which often include notes of blackcurrant, plum, chocolate, truffle, and spices. They have a powerful yet elegant structure with fine tannins and excellent aging potential. These wines can often age for decades and improve with time.
Property
After Denis Durantou's death, the estate is managed by his daughters, who continue his legacy and maintain the high quality standards he set.
